Here’s How Frederic Aspiras Prepped Lady Gaga’s Unexpected, Statement-Making Oscars Braid

03/14/2023

Lady Gaga hit the 95th Annual Academy Awards champagne colored carpet in full Mother Monster glam. Eyes, coaled. Blush for days. Lips, cherry red with high shine. Equally bold? Her hair — pulled back by Frederic Aspiras in a severe French braid.

The juxtaposition of hyper, 80s-forward feminine makeup and her hair’s austere elegance was in a word: unexpected. Later, when Gaga performed a stripped down version of her 2023 Oscars best original song nominated “Hold My Hand,” free of the makeup, the braid’s beauty came into full focus. We expect this style to trend in a big way.

Aspiras shared his tips to create Gaga’s braid, one of his “favorite glams to date” on Instagram. Keep scrolling for links to the Joico products he used to prep and style her braid.

Prep

  1. Start by washing hair with Joico Defy Damage Shampoo ($25.00).
  2. Then apply Joico Defy Damage Protective Mask ($28.00) to damp hair and let sit in hair for 5 minutes. Rinse.
  3. Apply small amount Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield ($28.00). Comb thru prior to blow drying.

Get the Look

  1. Create grip and hold for braiding by using Joico JoiWhip Foam ($22.50) onto damp hair.
  2. Blow out hair in the direction of the braid.
  3. Add a slight bend to the hair with a curling iron. The waves or curl in the hair will bend into your braid, preventing hair from sticking out of the braid. (Tip: If you have fine hair try spraying Joico Hair Shake ($24.50) into hair. This gives more volume to your braid.)
  4. For added control and hold while braiding use Joico JoiGel Firm ($21.50) and apply while cross weaving your sections of hair. This provides a very smooth and flawless finish.
  5. Use a toothbrush to spray Joico Power Spray ($22.50) to the bristles and comb thru the braid to polish and hold down fly aways.
