Not all haircuts are created equal for every person. Each person has a different head shape, carries their hair differently, and has a different growth pattern. While this all makes sense, how come haircuts techniques are adjusted for these factors?
If the hair doesn’t work with the head shape, it can cause the client to be fighting with their hair every morning till they come to see you again. Cuts just need to be adjusted for all these factors so that the client wears the hair and not the other way around.
Erin Rausch-Miller understands this and through science-based research, the technique of shaping, and the idea of cause and effect, she is able to customize each client’s look to them. She explains it as giving the client what look they want and what inevitably they need, which are NOT always the same. Erin is a long time stylist and salon owner in Madison, WI.
Erin’s thoughtful interview dives beyond shaping into her journey, her thoughts on tipping in the industry, how she made it through 20 weddings in one season and much more. It’s a must listen!
“I needed to know how to back myself up and I needed to know more so who I was. There were times when I first opened my doors, where I was like ‘Ok, defer back to my manager. What does my manager want me to do? Oh wait! I’m the manager. No one’s backing me up here.’”
“People are often a little confused. I’m like ‘I am going to measure your head shape, in order to determine how I should cut your hair’….You narrow in on where the person carries their hair, you know the growth pattern of the hair and give a customized haircut.”
“So I want to make sure I marry what the person wants and what the person needs to be, like, this perfect customized cut.”
