Just when you thought that Reese Witherspoon’s red carpet hairstyles couldn’t possibly get any better, the actress comes back again with another dazzling hair moment.
At the NYC premiere of her new Apple TV + series, Surface, last night, the star—who is an executive producer on the show— looked stunning as ever sporting a sophisticated up-do, which came courtesy of her go-to hairstylist Lona Vigi.
“My inspiration for Reese was attainable sophistication, but I had to create a look that could handle the NYC rain and humidity,” Vigi shared. “I opted for an elegant high bun that could handle the weather and show off her high collar dress!”
Lucky for us, we got Vigi to spill all the details, including all the Clairol Professionals’ Shimmer Lights products you need to recreate this gorgeous look with your clients.

Step 1: Prep, Prep, Prep
To begin, Vigi washed Witherspoon’s hair and extensions with Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo ($13.80) and Conditioner ($13.80) to tone down the brassiness and keep her blonde bright. To refresh and condition, she used the Clairol Shimmer Lights Violet Toning Mask ($11.30) which also helps reduce brass and add vibrancy.
Next, she prepped Reese’s hair by applying Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Leave-In Styling Treatment ($12.30) right below the ears and downwards on the hair, brushing through thoroughly.
PRO TIP: Vigi loves this product to restore lost moisture due to hair’s exposure to sun, chlorine, and saltwater during summer.
While damp, prep the hair with Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Thermal Shine Spray ($10.30), working generously into dampened ends and into the scalp. “I love this product because it protects hair from heat and adds so much shine!” Vigi says.
From there, she blow dried the hair using a medium sized round bristle brush, making sure to grip the hair and shape it the way she desired.
Step 2: Creating the Updo
Once Witherspoon’s hair was dry, Vigi parted her hair down the middle, leaving a triangle shape of hair out from the crown of the head, toward the face (this part of the hair is down and not in the ponytail yet!).
PRO TIP: Use this technique to avoid hair bubbles and to have more control over the shape you’re trying to create.
After that, craft the rest of the hair into a neat ponytail with an elastic band towards the top of the head to draw the face upward. Add the front bits into the ponytail and lightly back comb the hair in the ponytail and braid it loosely for an “undone” bun.
Finally, wrap the braid around the base of the pony and secure it with hair pins.
PRO TIP: To create a sleek look, use a spoolie or brush lacquered with hairspray or gel to smooth fly-aways.
Step 3: Finishing Touches
For some extra drama, add the Clairol Professional Thermal Shine Spray ($10.30) to set the hair with hold and shine, using a baby toothbrush to sculpt the finished look.
Step 4: The Final Look
After her hair (and makeup!) was complete, Witherspoon slipped into her beautiful custom Schiapparelli dress and hit the red carpet.
