Vitamin C has definitely been on our minds lately, but more in our OJ than in our skincare. But, sleeping on this do-it-all ingredient could mean missing the solution to your biggest skin concerns. From uneven tone to texture and dullness, Vitamin C takes it all on.
While we know vitamin C for boosting our immune system, it boosts our skin just as well. This powerful antioxidant triggers our skin to heal itself by bumping up collagen and elastin production, as well as neutralizes free radicals to further improve skin cell regeneration. This dual-action process reduces redness and blemishes, as well as reveals fresh, glowing skin underneath.
By regularly incorporating the right product into your routine, vitamin C can target just about any skin concern while improving overall tone, texture and brightness. Consider the following factors (and check out our current favorite product), to get the most out of this miracle ingredient.
Vitamin C skincare comes in various forms, including creams, gels, toners and lotions. However, the favorite amongst professionals is definitely a high-quality serum. Because vitamin C is considered “unstable,” products can become compromised and less effective when they are exposed to light or air –– something to consider when a product is sold in clear packaging or a form that has easy access to air. To best maintain your products, choose one in an air-tight container that can be sealed and stored in a dark drawer or cabinet.
Type of Vitamin C
In addition to product types, there are many ways for vitamin C to appear as an ingredient, too. When peeping the back of a product, you might see sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, amongst others. Yet even with so many competitors, L-ascorbic acid holds the title as the most effective and researched type of vitamin C. This low-PH makeup of the ingredient resurfaces and protects skin super effectively while being widely trusted as a skincare superhero.
Vitamin C concentrations typically range from 5% to 20% depending on the product. Although this ingredient is typically less irritating than other anti-agers, like retinol, those with super sensitive skin should consider starting with a lower dose. For normal, low-sensitivity skin types, feel free to start with a higher concentration to jump start the progress. While this ingredient is relatively gentle on skin, always start with a patch test to determine your skin’s reaction. Then, work up to adding a few drops to clean skin and layering underneath a moisturizer. And of course, always remember sunscreen!
Even as skincare’s top ingredient, vitamin C does double duty when paired with vitamin E. This duo does a great job at protecting skin from UV rays and photodamage (i.e. the effects of excessive exposure to the sun). Products with both of these antioxidants have double the assurance that the negative impacts of free radicals, such as fine lines and dullness, will be kept at bay.
Considering all of these benchmarks, we’ve found one product to do it all. The S20 Youth Serum comes in an airtight container with a pump lid and uses potent L-ascorbic acid plus vitamin E to turn over new cells and reveal clearer, brighter skin underneath. The 13% vitamin C concentration falls safely in the middle of the spectrum and gives safe, jaw-dropping results. Plus, the formula is free of parabens, fragrance, alcohol and dyes –– all huge wins for us at The Tease.
