Netflix & Frills: Sex Education

02/28/2019

If you haven’t binged Sex Education yet, you’re missing out on some great outfits, and even greater characters. The new Netflix Original, which was released in January, has already gotten plenty of acclaim, with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Asa Butterfield plays Otis, a UK high schooler whose mom is a sex therapist. We’re not sure about you, but having a mom who pries into your already awkward high school relationships doesn’t sound too desirable. Despite that, Otis finds that he’s picked up on some of his mom’s tactics, and uses his knowledge to help his fellow classmates, becoming a bit of a therapist in his own right. If this premise alone doesn’t have you queuing up the first episode, just wait for the show’s fashion statements.

While Otis’s style is mostly straightforward, all of the supporting characters have some great moments. We’re big fans of Maeve’s (Emma Mackey) confidence in flaunting a punk rock chic look mixed with a little bit of grunge, topped off by signature pink hair. Maeve’s friend, and part of the popular clique, Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), sports some very 80s-inspired looks with plenty of color and pops of lipstick to match. Round it all off with Ola (Patricia Allison), whose look is almost way too cool and relaxed for high school, and you’ve got a group of three girls who really know how to put pieces together. We wish we could have been as cool and effortless as them when we were in high school.

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of outfit inspo for all of the guys out there, too. Otis’s best friend, Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), looks certified fresh in every scene, almost always with a killer pattern. And don’t even get us started on the fabulous looks that Eric and Otis put together for going to see Hedwig and the Angry Inch. And though we’re not huge fans of his personality, we can’t knock Anwar (Chaneil Kular) for his ability to toe the line between preppy and new wave. We’re kind of thinking it’s necessary for members of the popular clique to emulate that 80s vibe. Check out some of our favorite looks from the show below, and add Sex Education to your watch list.
