The Best and Boldest Hair Looks From the 2022 MTV VMAS

08/29/2022

When it comes to delivering iconic and truly unforgettable hair moments, the MTV Video Music Awards rarely disappoint. For the self-described “biggest music party of the year,” our favorite stars always come through serving the most over-the-top and daring hair—think Gwen Stefani’s blue space buns in 1998 or Lady Gaga’ s wavy blue-tipped strands and meat fascinator in 2010.

Thankfully, this year’s red carpet hair was just as good. Whether they chose to keep their look super sleek or go the more experimental route, attendees and their glam teams all managed to serve some truly dreamy hairstyles that we can’t help but obsess over.

Ahead, some of our favorite hair moments from the 2022 MTV VMAs.

Lizzo

Lizzo turned heads with her sleek, slicked-back wet look hair that was styled by Shelby Swain. According to Swain, “Creating this look was so rewarding, I loved every moment of it.”

To create this look, which required the use of a wig, Swain had to set the foundation. “Going into wig placement may seem simple but we have to remember healthy hair is our best reward,” she says. To maintain Lizzo’s beautiful tresses, she washed and cleansed with A Curl Can Dream. “The curls were so soft, supple and voluminous I was tempted to do a completely different look. Lizzo’s curls were dreamy” says Swain.

Adding to the curl definition achieved during the shampoo, she then went in and hydrated the curls to perfection with the Curl Can Dream Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. Next, she blew out the curls with the GHD Helios Dryer. “This dryer not only straightens the hair with ease, it adds shine as well,” Swain says. The dryer is a work of art but keeping the hair protected is always the goal so she applied Matrix Instant Cure as a heat protectant and I was sure to keep it close as I would be needing it again.

Once she finished blow drying, she was able to curate Lizzo’s locs into a secure braided base and used the Matrix Tension Reliever on her scalp to provide extra moisture and protection for her hair to remain gorgeous while flaunting this sleek bold hairstyle. “I want to remind all of my naturalistas that opt for wigs and braids as a protective style that blow drying is still an important step as you never want to cover damp hair with a wig,” Swain says. “The GHD blow dryer provides a great option for using friendly yet effective heat combined with a great heat protector and wash and conditioning routine.” Finishing up the style, Swain laid Lizzo’s wig and reached for the Matrix Instant Cure because it is also pulling double duty as a detangler.

Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter totally served ‘60s glamour with her side swept bands and flowing locks that were styled by hairstylist Jennifer Yepez. To finish off the look, Yepez added a super chic black padded headband.
