The Only Constant is Change

06/26/2020

2020. What a wild ride. Being a full-time, working mom has quickly shifted to being a stay-at-home mom and part-time teacher with COVID-19. Talk about having an overnight identity crisis while also dealing with a pandemic.

There was initially this pressure to get EVERYTHING done while I was home. Then, I quickly realized what an overwhelming task that was and created a routine that allowed for lots of wiggle room.

I have embraced the words “There are no rules in quarantine,” which just means that there is no right or wrong.  There is no more “life as we knew it.” But, what I have discovered is there is a solution for everything, even if that is just to let it go.

I have been forced to think outside the box when it comes to serving my clients, like offering more at-home hair care and home color kits. I can connect with them on FaceTime and walk them through styling their own hair. At the end of the day, my clients will remember the way I connected with them and made them feel.

With my return to work this week, I realize there will be another period of adapting. We are not going back to business as usual. There will be new guidelines and structures that will require us to work differently. It will require more communication, patience and understanding from everyone.

Over these past 11 weeks, I’ve learned how to better take care of myself so I can adapt more easily. My first days back at work, I am only taking clients that are super flexible, because I know that I will need that period of time to adjust. Once I can see what works and what doesn’t, I can then show up better for everyone.

By definition, change is the act of making or becoming different. Today, there are protests around the country demanding change. I am often resistant to change because I want to be able to decide if it’s “good” or “bad.” Sometimes it becomes so obvious that change is necessary that there is no good or bad…it just is.

If there is one thing that I have learned this year, it’s that the only constant in life is change. I will miss being home with my kids everyday. But, I can show them how to acknowledge where we’re all at and embrace the struggle to keep moving forward. When circumstances that are beyond our control show up so big that we can’t look away, let’s be brave enough to outgrow the life we have built.
