#MakingHairstory: Lindsay Muscato on the Secret to a Successful Business

03/15/2020

This March, The Tease is bringing you stories from women who are #MakingHairstory, #BakingBeauty and #DoingItForTheCultuHer. Learn how these influential women are breaking barriers, disrupting their industries and empowering others to do the same all month long.

Inspired by her own personal need for a hair tie that didn’t stretch, break or rip out hair, founder and SHE-EO Lindsay Muscato changed the game with her hair tie company, TELETIES. Muscato conceptualized, researched and tested many prototypes before perfecting her vision. And to bring that vision to life, she enlisted the help of her friends, going from working out of her garage to creating a full-on business.

With hair ties of all sizes and colors, Muscato has created the perfect product for hair of all types and lengths. We had the pleasure of speaking to Muscato about her business and those who inspire her work.

The Tease: How did you get started in the hair industry?

Lindsay Muscato: By complete chance. I don’t come from the hair industry, which I think has really helped me to think outside of the box with TELETIES.

What inspired you to create TELETIES?

The personal need for a better hair tie. I am a busy mom on the go, and I wanted a functional and fashionable hair tie that kept my hair up. I was also tired of washing my hands and my hair tie getting wet.

How would you describe your relationship to hair?

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. My hair is naturally wavy, but I like to wear it straight so doing my hair takes some time.

Women are often discouraged from sharing their accomplishments, but we want to hear about them. List some of your career highlights. What are you most proud of?

There are two things that come to mind right away. We give back to an organization called FORCE and I am proud to say that we are literally saving lives by our contributions. Another accomplishment has been building my team. I am blessed to have such a great and talented group around me daily. We truly love what we do.

What are the biggest challenges you have experienced within the industry and how did you overcome them?

One of our biggest challenges has been educating our end consumer on all the added benefits of TELETIES. We try to continue to post on social media and send out educational information with all orders. We have found that videos and quality imagery are the best way to get our message across.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

1. Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.

2. Build a great team around you. This is important for being successful.

3. Always try to think outside of the box.

4. Be genuine and treat others the way you would want to be treated.

5. Set yearly goals so you have a defined plan for the year.

Are there any women in the industry who inspire you or your work? If so, who?

Sara Blakley! She is from my hometown of Clearwater [Florida] and is a complete rockstar. I like how real she is. If you do not follow her on Instagram, you should.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other women within the hair industry?

Always remember that if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. [Put] forward motion daily and follow your gut.

What’s next for you?

We will be releasing a new product extension that I am really excited and passionate about. Stay tuned. We love solving hair problems at TELETIES.
