Reborn: The Perm

07/14/2017

With the fashion and beauty world, it’s only expected that everything old becomes new again. Just like nude lips, the top-knot and high-waisted jeans, the hairstyle that dominated the 80s is making a comeback. Yes, it’s exactly what you think it is: the perm *shudders*. But this time, we don’t totally hate it.

Women are starting to turn to a modern twist on the classic perm in order to achieve the highly desired beachy texture. The perms we’re used to are characterized by their tight waves, curly bangs, excessive amounts of hairspray, and the “higher the hair, closer to god” mantra. But today, it’s all about the beachy look that you see on the red carpet.

The modern perm’s goal is to create more movement in the hair and shy away from those ultra-tight curls. And with that, the perm is slowly being rebranded into a wave technique instead of a curling one. Think Blake Lively – her wavy, tousled hair has been on trend for years and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, explaining the heightened interest in perms as a more permanent solution.

But like many hairstyles, it’s up for interpretation.

It can be more voluminous or more textured and tousled.

@juleshough woke up with the #901waves ?? all thanks to @olaplex and her fresh new #perm! #ninezeroone #901girl

The ‘80s just called, they want their perm back..but we’ve decided to keep it.
