As the larger Beauty industry continues to navigate the intersection of business, culture, and social responsibility, Good Dye Young has remained vocal in its support of marginalized groups and the values of its co-founders and team. In advance of the 2026 midterm elections and resultant victories for Democrats — the “blue wave,” or “tsunami” — Good Dye Young once again demonstrated its willingness to engage in conversations that extend beyond hair.
We caught up with Good Dye Young President, Ashley Floto, to discuss the brand’s recent posts, why speaking out matters, and what the “blue wave” might mean for real inclusivity, plus her thoughts on “blue haired liberal” boogeyman. Read on for our conversation.
The Tease: In the run up to the midterm elections, which literally just took place yesterday, many other hair brands went quiet on issues of racial-, sexual-, social- and environmental justice — anything approaching ‘woke’ or DEI. Not Good Dye Young. The brand has spoken out against ICE, continued to be loudly pro LGBTQ+, and co-founder Hayley Williams has been vocal about her support for Palestine. Yesterday your team posted a video in support of getting out the vote with a nod to the then-hoped-for ‘blue wave.‘ Can you tell us why Good Dye Young puts itself out there like this?
Ashley Floto: Community has always come first at Good Dye Young, and Brian and Hayley are part of that community too. They’ve never been quiet about doing what’s right, and right now that means shouting about the blue wave from the rooftops!
Today — presumably seeing the results which included unprecedented gains for Democrats at the local, state and national levels, not to mention historic firsts, a total repudiation of the Trump administration and Republican governance — Good Dye Young doubled-down in a new post, celebrating the ‘return of woke’ with a 20% discount on site. Can you tell us about that decision?
Floto: Vibrant hair has been used as an insult by some conservatives. We want to reclaim it, so we’re offering a discount to everyone who shows up as their most authentic self. Here’s your reminder: doing what makes you feel like the best version of you is all that matters.
What impact will these political changes have on Good Dye Young?
Floto: If we rub you the wrong way, that’s okay. We might not be the brand for you, and there are plenty of others out there. We’ll be over here, loud and proud.
How do you think this “blue wave” will impact the beauty industry?
Floto: We believe what’s ahead holds more hope, more positivity, and more self-expression, and we’re here for every bit of it.
Last thing… what’s your take on the “blue haired liberal” stereotype?
Floto: Exactly that, a silly stereotype. Vivid hair has always been labeled something, but a label is just a silly stereotype. We’re hopeful we’re moving toward more acceptance and appreciation for people who don’t look like us, whatever that looks like.
