Colorist Jacob Schwartz Shares Exactly How to Get Margot Robbie’s Barbie Blonde Hair Color From the “Barbie” Premiere

07/10/2023

I think that we can all agree that Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour looks have been nothing short of fantastic. From Mexico City to Sydney to even Seoul, the actress has been churning out one perfectly pink ensemble after another—all inspired by everyone’s favorite doll—and we just can’t seem to get enough.

Naturally, the star saved her best and Barbie-iest look for last. For the Greta Gerwig-directed movie’s L.A. premiere last night, Robbie paid homage to the iconic “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie from the 1960s, with a stunning custom Schiaparelli gown, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and Manolo Blahnik heels. While the styling was fabulous on its own, what really took the look to the next level was her perfectly curled ponytail complete with a retro side-swept bang.

Robbie’s doll-like ponytail was styled by celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, but her gorgeous Barbie blonde color was the work of celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz.

“I really wanted Margot’ blonde to embody Barbie on the red carpet without it being so obvious and over bleached,” Schwartz explained of Robbie’s specific shade. “When the light hits her hair, I wanted it to sparkle and bounce like those legendary blonde supermodel and actresses of the ‘90s.”

The Tease was lucky enough to get Schwartz to share step-by-step details on how he achieved Robbie’s Barbie-inspired blonde using Schwarzkopf’s BLONDME products. Keep scrolling for his complete hair breakdown.

Get the Look:

  1. Using fine weaves, highlight using a babylight technique with BLONDME premium lightener 9+ with 20 volume BLONDME premium developer to create even lift while protecting the bonds in the hair. “I like that the BLONDME developers have higher level of care ingredients inside the bottle, so it helps to also protect the cuticle during development and the Schwarzkopf IGORA VIBRANCE has Aquaxyl which helps maintain / add moisture in the hair while toning,” Schwartz says.
  2. Lift to a golden light blonde and then cleanse the hair using the BLONDME All Blondes Rich Shampoo ($11.70) and BLONDME All Blondes Rich Conditioner ($17.32). This will help to build new bonds in the hair and prepare it for an even toning application.
  3. On damp hair, apply Schwarzkopf IGORA VIBRANCE to tone the blonde and add shine. Use 9-0 around the hairline to maintain brightness and 7-0 for a shadow root on the top half of the head and 6-0 underneath the crown for extra depth at the base mixed with 6-Volume gel activator. “I like that IGORA VIBRANCE is Alkaline as I find it gives better penetration and longevity,” Schwartz says.
  4. For the mid-lengths and ends, apply a mixture of IGORA VIBRANCE 9-0+9-4+8-46 with equal parts 1.9% / 6-Volume gel activator to create a beautiful lived in warm blonde tone.
  5. Develop for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Carefully rinse the deeper base color first while holding the lighter pieces up to maintain brightness on the ends. Finish with another shampoo and condition with the BLONDME All Blondes Rich Shampoo and BLONDME All Blondes Rich Conditioner to seal the color and rebuild strength in the hair.
