Ellen Devine Breaks Down the ‘Blunt Soft Textured Bob’

03/11/2026

If clients are inspired to get a big chop, let them!

Ellen Devine, part of the Sam Villa ArTeam and Master Stylist at Reverie Beauty Co., says, “Spring is the perfect time to refresh hair, and cutting off longer lengths that endured the dry winter months is a great place to start. Bobs are still having a major moment this season, but with a shift in how they are layered and styled, giving the look a fresh modern feel.”

A recent example of the trend came from Demi Moore who wore an edgy bob wig during FW26 in Milan, creating a standout look that perfectly captures the seasonal shift.

“The beauty of a blunt soft textured bob is its versatility.  It can be worn polished and professional, yet it air-dries nicely, making it ideal for spring and summer months,” adds Devine.

Devine believes that anyone can wear a bob — it’s all about customizing the texture.  “On thicker hair incorporate more point cutting and thinning to remove weight.  On finer or less dense hair, point cut more shallowly to maintain fullness. The principle remains the same, but the amount of texture added, shifts based on hair density.”

Devine is calling the look a “Blunt Soft Textured Bob,” something that’s not overly layered but has airiness and movement on the perimeter. Read on for her take on how to get the look.

Cutting Tips:

  1. Focus on using small sections when cutting wet for control and precision.
  2. Try taking horizontal sections and notching into the perimeter with shears at a 45° angle. This can be done wet while cutting length or dry after the length is established for that textured look on the perimeter.
  3. Detail work and texturizing should be done when hair is dry. Take verticals slices with elevation low and disrupt the length by deep point cutting with Sam Villa Signature Series InvisiBlend Shears to create movement and texture.

Styling Tips:

  1. Rotate irons to create the lazy “it waves” of the season.  First use a Sam Villa Signature Series Professional Curling Iron 1” leaving the top hair and end out, the goal is more of a bend to the hair than a curl. Then use the Sam Villa SLEEKR Professional Flat Iron with horizontal sections to create a soft bend.  Always let the style cool down completely between running hands through to allow style to hold!
  2. Use a texture spray and medium hairspray to hold style especially during warmer weather. In more humid areas, use an anti-humidity product before blow drying.
  3. For a wet messy look, start with wet hair or spray dry hair with water. Apply a mousse or dry oil and then use hands to fashion a messy part and texture.  Finish with a high shine spray for hold and gloss.
