Evanie Frausto on the ‘Primal’ Symbolism of the SHOWPONY SS27 Runway Show

Earlier this month, Evanie Frausto’s SHOWPONY SS27 collection hit the runway at the Ukrainian National Home as part of NYFW — the brand’s sophomore showing.

For SS27, the vibe was markedly different. Whereas FW26 felt rooted on earth with its models styled as sort of whimsical, gothy wood nymphs, this season felt more abstract and otherworldly. Models were blasted with glitter as if trapped in a moonbeam and transported to the runway.

Frausto, the celebrity and editorial hairstylist and SHOWPONY creative director, says, “this season, I wanted to turn the world of SHOWPONY inside out. The idea started with a wig. What happens when you flip it over and look at the part you’re not supposed to see—the construction, the knots, the underside, the things that usually stay hidden?”

Frausto adds, “Hair is my material, but this time I wanted to see how far I could push it beyond hair itself. Silk is screen printed to look like strands. Wool and mohair mimic its texture. Deadstock hair is heated, felted, and manipulated using techniques I’ve learned behind the chair. At a certain point, the line between it all becomes blurred.”

They go on to say, “The collection is a continuation of the SHOWPONY universe, but here garments start to take shape as a wardrobe — moving from head to toe, with clothing and headwear becoming part of the same hairy world. I wanted the pieces to feel ceremonial and otherworldly, like you’ve walked into the middle of a ritual.”

Frausto used PRAVANA Vivids in Wild Orchid, Aquamarine, Sangria and Garnet as part of the collection.

“There’s symbolism in the collection, and there’s the moon. Using dyes from PRAVANA, red feels like sacrifice and rebirth, while blue evokes a sense of cleansing—a nod to water, renewal, and my abuela, who never failed to remind me that we have the chance to wash it all away, and start again, ” says Frausto.

“The lunar tones speak to cycles, instinct, and everything we can’t quite explain. Together, they feel primal.”
