ICYMI, singer Kacey Musgraves crushed at the 2026 MTV VMAs. Not only did she perform a stunning, and faithful-to-the-original-recording, rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” in tribute to Dolly Parton, but she did so do with rhinestones and enormous hair. The retro look was obviously Dolly and also very Kacey. In a word: everything.
For her hair, a custom wig, Musgraves turned to longtime collaborator, Giovanni Delgado, who’s executed some of her most iconic looks. Read on for our quick conversation with Delgado about how this came together, the synergy between both superstars, and what he’ll always love about Dolly.

The Tease: What was the initial inspiration behind the hair design for Kacey’s 2026 VMAs appearance, and how did the look come together with the rest of her glam and wardrobe?
Giovanni Delgado: As soon as we heard about the tribute, my wheels started turning. Dolly is known for her incredible volume, and I knew I wanted to honor that in a way that felt respectful. Whatever I created, I didn’t want the hair to feel like a costume.
I assumed Dolly was a direct reference for this look, but you and Kacey have been known to really experiment with volume over the years. So, how did you balance paying homage while ensuring the hairstyle felt like Kacey and was appropriate for the 2026 VMAs?
Delgado: There’s such a beautiful overlap between Dolly and Kacey’s aesthetics, which worked in my favor. What I ultimately created felt authentically Kacey while drawing from a look Dolly pioneered: a modern take on big hair that felt elevated, intentional, and respectful rather than kitschy. There’s definitely a fine line there, and finding that balance was important to me, and I’m so grateful it was well received.
Some key players in creating this look were Color Wow Hair Xtra Large Volumizer and Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray.

What is one thing you’ll always love about Dolly Parton?
Delgado: I love Dolly not only for her fearless style and incredible taste, but, of course, for her huge heart. Having spent most of my life in Nashville, I grew up listening to her music, and her storytelling has always resonated with me. I feel incredibly lucky to honor her through my work and create a style that I hope she would appreciate.
