How to Maintain Post Salon Hair According to Master Stylist Gregga Prothero

09/13/2022

There’s no feeling comparable to leaving the salon after an appointment. Whether you’ve got a fresh chop or just touched up your color, it’s hard not to feel a colossal confidence boost while walking out the door.

While the vibrancy and healthiness of freshly done hair will eventually fade, there are certainly ways to keep it looking its best for much longer. Here are some tips from Master Stylist and L.A. salon owner Gregga Prothero on how to maintain hair post hair appointment.

Tip 1: Limit Heat Styling

Sure, hot tools, like curling irons, hairdryers, and flat irons can leave our hair looking more stylish and put together. But over time, that heat styling can lead to some pretty serious damage, including dry hair, breakage, and split ends. Heat damage can also cause the pigments of your hair, whether it’s natural or dyed, to oxidize. The result is faded coloring, especially when hair has high porosity.

Tip 2: Use Salon Trusted Haircare Products

You get what you pay for and using trusted hair care products post your hair appointment will really make a huge difference in your maintenance and care. Using drugstore products can damage your hair and salon trusted hair care products can come recommended straight from your stylists!

Tip 3: Wear a Hat or Use Some Sort of Heat / UV Protector When You Are Exposed to Sun for Extended Periods of Time ☀

If your hair has prolonged exposure to the sun, UVA and UVB rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strand, called the cuticle. Sun damage can come in the forms of discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness. It’s important to protect your hair using a UV protector such as Davines SU Milk (18.00) and/ or a hat.

Tip 4: Prebook your next appointment

While you are at the salon, go ahead and pre-book your next appointment. This takes the guesswork out of when you’ll be in next and helps you stick to a solid schedule when it comes to maintaining your hair color and/or cut.

Tip 5: Do not wait too long to see your stylist

It’s best to have a consistent schedule when booking to see your stylists so that your stylist does not have to start from scratch at the next appointment! Depending on your cut and/or color, discuss your maintenance schedule with your stylist before your appointment. This ensures you can commit to the style’s upkeep and guarentee the look you are going for meets your lifestyle!
