Marcus Francis Breaks Down Kate Hudson’s AFI Fest Finger Wave Hair

11/03/2025

A-lister Kate Hudson hit the red carpet for the premiere of her new film, “Song Sung Blue,” at the American Film Institute Festival looking like a star of the silver screen in a burnt orange gown by Roksanda Ilinčić and her hair set in Old Hollywood finger waves.

Hudson’s longtime hairstylist Marcus Francis created the timeless style with his go-to Joico products. ICYMI, Hudson is Joico’s first Global Celebrity Spokesperson.

Of the red carpet look, Francis told The Tease, “I wanted to give a nod to the classic Veronica Lake finger wave hairstyle, but with a wet shine finish to modernize the look.” Scroll to see exactly how Francis styled the star’s hair.

Get the Look:

  • “On damp hair, I applied Joico Dream Blowout Glass 72HR Frizz Fighter from roots to ends for smooth, shiny strands, then combed it through and finished with Joico Power Whip Design Foam from the mid-length to the ends.
  • I used a round brush with tension to blow-dry Kate’s hair, then made a deep side part before using the backside of a 1” curling iron to create a finger wave style on the sides. Clamping the iron from the backside as you shape the section of hair to go from left, then to the right, gives a Marcel iron finger wave that’s more intentional, especially at the roots and on long hair.
  • Continue this on both sides, gently using a comb to blend the sections and mold that S-wave shape along the face. Use Joico Curls Like Us Define and Sea Curl Defining Gelée to give it hold and shine. Place a few no-dent setting clips along the hairline near the face to freeze the shape, adding a little Joico JoiMist Firm Hairspray to lock in additional hold.
  • For the back section, I used medium-size hot rollers, rolling from the ends to the roots to provide fullness from the mid-length to the ends. I sprayed Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finish Spray and let them set for 15 minutes.
  • I brushed out the sections with a Denman brush to create a full, soft wave, connecting to the side sections.
  • Remove the setting clips and polish off the face-framing finger waves by using gel on your index fingertip to sculpt any baby hairs or ends that need finishing.”
