With a career founded on authenticity and propelled by genuine praise, Marc Ballance has built a reputation that’s as polished as the clients who sit in his chair. And the best part? He’s just getting started.
Ballance’s journey began in Dublin, where he started cutting hair in his family’s salon under his mother’s guidance at only 15 years old. Driven and fearless, he moved to London at 18 to pursue an education at a local hair academy, working on high-end clientele. As his portfolio of skills grew, so did his reputation in the industry.
It wasn’t long before Ballance found his way into the TV and film industry working for Universal Pictures, which opened doors to a whole new kind of clientele: celebrities. With work featured in Vogue, GQ, ELLE, Cosmopolitan and collaborations with IGK Hair, Broadway, and Strike Tip, his plethora of skills continues to grow. Ballance then moved to New York where he currently works after establishing connections with hairstylist John Barrett. Barrett was keen to get Ballance into the city and actually sponsored him for his very first work visa.
Today, Ballance specializes in men’s and women’s haircutting and is the trusted barber and stylist for stars like Nick Jonas, Jesse Metcalfe, and Jay Shetty. In fact, Ballance revealed a fun, behind-the-scenes moment with us. Jay Shetty once asked Joe Jonas for a stylist recommendation, and just like that, he got the call. He even styled Bad Bunny for a Saturday Night Live appearance in New York this past February.
Despite his growing fame, Ballance remains grounded in his belief that success in the industry is still largely built on trust and personal connection. Although social media is helpful for building your brand and reputation, people crave real connections. He told The Tease that many of his celebrity clients have come not through online buzz, but through recommendations from other hairstylists on set. They would say, “we have a guy, go check him out.”
Ballance’s approach to hair is equal parts artistry and humility. He credits his success to staying authentic, consistent, making bold choices, and never letting your ego take over. You have to have confidence and truly care for the people in your chair. “You could be the best hairstylist,” he says, “but not be booked out.” He encourages aspiring stylists to master the fundamentals because once you know the basics, you can create anything.
Now, he’s set on mentoring the next generation. Ballance is as committed to sharing knowledge as he is to cutting hair. When asked his biggest piece of advice for new stylists, he said, “there is always something to learn, just keep going and be a genuinely nice person.” Ballance isn’t just creating standout looks, he’s building genuine connections and setting standards when it comes to being a modern hairstylist.
