Tate McRae hit the VMAs red carpet like a total vision in a white, sheer ensemble — but it wasn’t the dress that caught our eye. It was the ostrich feathers that celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood painstakingly secured to her hair!
Wood said he was “inspired by a runway show that incorporated ostrich feathers,” so he “sourced and hand-dyed [them] to perfectly match Tate’s natural highlights.” The effect allowed them to “flow seamlessly as she moved with elegance,” he added. We couldn’t agree more.
Read on for a breakdown on McRae’s look, including the Paul Mitchell products Wood used at each step, especially the feathers.
Get the Look:
- I prepped clean, towel-dried hair with Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press Thermal Protection Hairspray for heat protection, followed by Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam at the roots to build volume. Using the Paul Mitchell Express Ion Round Brush, I sculpted the face frame and set rollers through the crown to achieve the necessary lift.
- Working from the nape upward, I polished the mid-shafts and ends with the Paul Mitchell Express Ion Round Brush and Paul Mitchell Neuro Dry Blow Dryer for a smooth, glossy finish. Once dry, I created soft, loose bends throughout the hair using the Paul Mitchell Neuro Curl in 1.25″.
- I layered in Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Hairspray and boosted root texture with Paul Mitchell Texturizing Spray.
- Each feather was secured with Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel, strategically placed mid-shaft and at the ends of select strands, creating a look that was both ethereal and effortlessly red-carpet ready.”
