Here’s Why Trace Metals Might Also Be Lurking in Your Hair Products

Ask any colorist about trace metals and they more than likely aren’t aware of the presence of minerals like copper, magnesium, and calcium in our water. But, the proof is in their client’s hair. Water containing a high mineral and metal concentration —aka “hard water”, has the ability to leave hair feeling dry, brittle, brassy, and dull. And when it comes to salon color, the build up of these same elements on the hair fiber can lead to less than optimal results at your next lightening, balayage, or color appointment.

However, it’s not just the metals in our water supply that you should be worried about harming your client’s strands.  According to Inventive Colorist and Certified Trichologist Bridgette Hill, our hair products could also be exposing us to copper and other metals.

“There are products that are on the market that we use that also have trace minerals,” she explained. “If you are managing some scalp conditions, there are active ingredients that also have trace metals.”

As we all know, haircare products like shampoo and conditioners are already no stranger to containing harmful ingredients like sulfates and parabens. As for heavy metals like copper and nickel, these elements are “naturally present” in our air, soil, and water so extremely low, trace levels can be found in some of the raw ingredients used in our products, per the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

When you take into consideration the fact that these metals —both from our water and our hair products—are accumulating in the hair fiber with every wash, as a colorist it’s hard not to be concerned.

As Hill points out, “When those metals are deep into the cortex, you’re never able to counteract them. When you work as a colorist, you’re working on that external cuticule, so even though you’re lifting pigment, if there is metal inside of that cortex, there’s going to be oxidative stress. So, that oxidative stress—molecular work that’s happening inside of that cortex—prevents you from being able to deliver your best work, because you’re not able to remove that copper.”

The good news? There is a way to finally put an end to these compromised color results caused by heavy metals. L’Oreal Professionnel Paris has developed a game-changing salon regimen called Metal Detox that is capable of detoxifying metals inside the hair fiber to ensure pure color results and hair integrity every single time.

Unlike most cleansing products on the market, this three-step salon process (which include a pre-treatment, a sulfate-free shampoo, and a conditioner/mask options) is able to penetrate into the hair fiber and neutralize metal particles from within, thanks to its patented, active ingredient glicoamine. With Metal Detox, you can ensure that each time your client leaves your chair after a color service that they are left with 100 percent reliable color results* and 87 percent less breakage*.

To experience the magic of the Metal Detox yourself, be sure to purchase the complete regimen at Saloncentric.

*Instrumental test Metal Detox pre-treatment + technical procedure + shampoo + mask. * no impact on lift and optimized color uptake.
