Malcolm Marquez on 2000s Updos Inspiring Ayo Edebiri’s ‘Ella McCay’ Premiere Hair

12/10/2025

Earlier this week, Ayo Edebiri hit the LA premiere of “Ella McCay” looking every bit the fashion darling and movie star that she is with a straight-from-the-runway Chanel look and “casual cool updo” by frequent collaborator Malcolm Marquez.

Marquez tells The Tease, “For Ayo’s look I wanted to do create a look that played off the elevated T-shirt look she wore on the carpet. The 2000s textured updos have a special charm that I think can dress up something casual, or dress down something overly serious.” For the look, Marquez used exclusively L’Oréal Professionnel Paris products and tools. Read on for a breakdown.

Get the Look:

  1. “I started this look by smoothing out Ayo’s hair using the Tecni.Art Transformer Lotion and the AirLight Pro hair dryer
  2. To add even more definition, I used a light layer of Tecni.Art Flex Liss Control on my hands while sculpting the updo, and I finished with the new Absolut Repair Molecular Oil for shine.
  3. Once in place, I separated the ends to create a piecey finish on the ends-locking them in place using the Techni.Art Fix Infinium 4 Hairspray by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris.”
