Recreate Nicole Richie’s Sleek and Sculptural Knot with These Pureology Styling Products

04/03/2024

A lot has changed in the decades since Nicole Richie burst onto the scene with “The Simple Life.” Richie has become a mother, founded a jewelry and clothing brand, and successfully transitioned from reality to scripted programming — acting in tv and, now, film. In all this time the one thing that has stayed the same is her outsized influence on style and beauty. Especially hair! Richie famously wore her hair in side bangs, bobs and even fashion colors, with a real knack for embracing hairstyles just before they fully trended. As a result, she continues to be a touchstone for many a millennial in search of hair inspiration.

For the premiere of her latest project, a remake of the cult-classic “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead,” Richie did not disappoint. The star rocked a sculptural updo with a gravity-defying knot thanks to celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell. The Tease connected with Russell, a Pureology global artistic ambassador, for his insights on this stunning red carpet hairstyle. Of the look Russell said, “I was inspired by her Schiaparelli dress to create an elegant and sleek knot using my favorite Pureology products.”

Scroll for a detailed step-by-step, including exactly which styling products Russell used.

  1. “On her blown out hair, I sectioned out the top of the hair and clipped it away for later. I used a golf ball sized amount of Weightless Volume Mousse ($32.00), through the sides of her hair and fastened her hair back into a ponytail with a bungee.
  2. I then unclipped the top section and applied a golf ball sized amount of Weightless Volume Mousse through the section and brushed through with a detangling brush.
  3. Next I combed the hair back and fastened around the ponytail base.
  4. I then used a large pearl sized amount of Shine Bright Taming Serum ($32.00) through the ponytail and wrapped it up into a sculptural knot and pinned with bobby-pins.
  5. I used Lock It Down Hairspray to shellack the sculptural knot to stay in place. I then sprayed the sides heavily and fine tuned any flyaways with a toothbrush. And there you have it!”
