To kick off the new season of Volume Up by the Tease, we dive into the journey of a hairdresser who has done it all. From working behind the chair, running salons, and now leading education and innovation at Aloxxi, Jessica Wall-Inella wears many hats!

Growing up surrounded by hairstylists, Jessica was inspired early on by her aunt, a hairdresser. During college, she worked three jobs while attending school, starting as a receptionist at Supercuts. By age 21, she attended hair school and became the Area Supervisor for 33 salons. This role forced her to step into leadership by making tough decisions, and developing her skills with managing teams of experienced professionals. Reflecting on that period, she shares, “I definitely ruffled some feathers and overcompensated for my age. It was hard, but it taught me to sit, listen, and think before opening my mouth. Try inspiring people instead of just firing people.”

She spent years running commission-based salons in NYC and continues to own a salon today. Her path eventually led her to Aloxxi, where she now leads a team focused on professional education, marketing, and sales. Just about everything but the warehouse work.

Aloxxi Education

At Aloxxi, the approach is different. “We understand what everyday behind the chair is like,” she says. “We create real hairdresser content, led by hairdressers, not a marketing department.” From hands-on trends programs to business techniques designed to save time and attract the right clientele, Aloxxi strives to meet hairdressers where they are.

The episode also explores the education side of the business. Jessica breaks down different types of learners: those who learn visually and can recreate later, those who need step-by-step guidance by her side, and those who prefer in-person touch of feeling hair and asking questions. Aloxxi’s programs are designed to meet these varying learning styles while progressing. Collaboration and mentorship are at the heart of her leadership philosophy. She loves seeing direct results from clients, students, her kids, etc. That is how she measures her success.

She also reflects on how Aloxxi functions like a large Italian family. Decision-making is collaborative by drawing from teams around the globe, and constantly evolving with new programs, including added science-based education initiatives. The goal is to make the tools, knowledge, and support that hairdressers need, easier to access so they can thrive creatively and professionally.

Listen to this episode if you’re in the hair industry, or if you’re curious about what it takes to turn hands-on experience into leadership and inspiration.

Sarah Hindsgaul didn’t move from Copenhagen to New York for glamor, she came to learn. With a portfolio in hand and excitement outweighing fear, she threw herself into the industry cold turkey. She quickly realized the work she was once proud of needed refining. From mastering the strict American blow-dry to retraining her eye for film and TV, she embraced the opportunity for growth. “You can never train enough,” she says.

Her early career was built on NYU student films, long days, and close collaboration with costume designers. Sarah learned that hair and makeup don’t lead the process, they support it. Understanding costumes, character, and story meant preparing far earlier than her chair time suggested. That mindset created a snowball effect. One job led to another, often in unexpected ways. She leaves us with a bit of advice: be kind to everyone, you never know where the next opportunity will come from.

Drawn to sci-fi and fantasy, Sarah found her creative home in genres that push artists to their limits. That passion led her to Stranger Things, where simplicity became key. Inspired by The Goonies, Season 1 focused on subtle, intentional choices that told deeper stories.

For Nancy Wheeler, hair became a visual marker of purity and emotional growth. Early on, her look was intentionally simple. Brushed, never cut, held back with a small hair clip that added that small ‘80s bump. She wasn’t meant to look like the stereotypical popular girl. Her appeal came from sweetness and sincerity. As Nancy matures, her hair evolves with her, introducing early teen experimentation while maintaining a polished appearance shaped by how she was raised. Each shift mirrors her emotional arc without overwhelming it.

Dustin Henderson’s hair tells a different kind of story. While his look remains consistent, it becomes increasingly intentional in its imperfection. As he grows more comfortable with himself by Season 5, his hair becomes less “put together” and slightly uneven. The goal was to look like he’s missed hair appointments, even though he hasn’t. The effect signals a quiet rejection of fitting in for the sake of it.

Sarah is deeply open to feedback, often sending actors away to live in a look before returning with honest notes. “The more criticism I take, the better I get,” she explains. Behind the scenes, the work is precise and demanding, with quick turnarounds, doubles, wigs, and all.

Sarah believes transformation is at the heart of her work. That philosophy now extends beyond the screen with Hindsgaul Hair, her Scandinavian-inspired haircare line designed to enhance movement, not perfection. “Don’t we all love transformations?” she says. “That’s why we’re here.”

For years, smooth hair in the professional space meant control: flattening the cuticle, minimizing frizz, and prioritizing sleekness above all else. But as we move into 2026, that definition has evolved. Smooth hair today is no longer about restriction, it’s about healthy polish, natural movement, and performance that lasts.

Stylists are moving away from heavy, coating-based formulas and toward smarter smoothing solutions that work with the hair, not against it. The result is a new standard of smooth that better supports the realities of the modern salon and today’s client lifestyle.

Frizz Control Without Compromise

So, what are clients really looking for in 2026? Smoother hair, less frizz, faster styling, and easier maintenance, without compromising the health or integrity of their hair. In response, today’s smoothing products focus on improving the condition of the hair fiber itself to deliver naturally smoother results.

When hair is healthier, frizz is reduced, shine improves, and movement is preserved. Smoothness becomes more consistent across hair types and services, without sacrificing volume or flexibility. “Smooth hair” now means every strand reflects light because it’s healthy from within, not because it’s weighed down with surface coatings.

Wella Professionals’ NEW SmoothFiller Service is a prime example of this evolution. This salon-exclusive service features an active ingredient that penetrates deep into the hair fiber rather than artificially coating the surface. Through thermal activation, the active ingredient fills gaps within the hair, delivering incredible smoothness while maintaining natural movement.

And curly clients don’t need to worry, SmoothFiller enhances softness and manageability without straightening the hair. Curls remain bouncy and defined, just with less frizz and more control. With low fumes and a game-changing minimalist formula, SmoothFiller is also vegan and sustainable. The formula is mineral oil–free, fragrance-free, contains only eight ingredients, and is dermatologically tested, making it as thoughtful as it is effective.

Easier and Faster in the Chair

Alongside hair health, efficiency has become a key driver of product adoption in salons. Stylists need smoothing solutions that streamline services, reduce styling time, and deliver reliable results without complex layering or excessive heat.

With an under-two-hour service and just three simple steps, the Wella SmoothFiller Service was designed to maximize efficiency and profitability. After shampooing and drying the hair to 80%, a single product is applied. Following a 20-minute development time, the hair is emulsified, rinsed, blow-dried, and straightened with 6–10 passes per section.

What truly sets SmoothFiller apart is its flexibility. Unlike traditional smoothing services that come with high fumes, long processing times, and strict post-service restrictions, SmoothFiller allows for same-day color services and immediate post-treatment freedom. Clients can wash, color, and style their hair without compromising results.

For stylists, the business opportunity is equally compelling. With a recommended service price of $150–$300 and just 260 services annually, salons can generate up to $78,000 in additional revenue.* SmoothFiller isn’t just a win for clients, it’s a smart investment for the salon.

Lasting Power That Goes Beyond the Finish

Smooth hair must perform well beyond the initial blow-dry. Clients expect results that hold up against humidity, heat styling, and everyday wear, without buildup or heaviness.

SmoothFiller delivers results that last up to three months, offering incredible softness, effortless styling, reduced frizz, and natural movement. The longevity of the service keeps clients coming back, with results that truly speak for themselves.

According to Wella Professionals Global Ambassador Nikki Lee, “SmoothFiller is redefining what a smoothing service can be. A true breakthrough that delivers smoother, frizz-free, more manageable hair. My clients and I are obsessed with it.”

In 2026, lasting power is a defining characteristic of professional-grade smoothing, ensuring polished results that remain consistent between appointments.

The Future of Smooth Is Performance-Driven

The new definition of smooth is rooted in health, efficiency, and endurance. For trade professionals, this shift represents an opportunity to deliver better results with less effort and to redefine smooth hair as something modern, intelligent, and alive.

Everyone remembers the moment they realized their passion. For Matthew Collins, it started at 12. Not with glamour, but with necessity. His dad told him if he wanted to cut his hair every week, he had to learn to do it himself. So he watched the barber, learned the craft, and began cutting his friends’ hair in return for beers.

By 22 Matthew knew he wanted to be a professional hairdresser. University wasn’t for him, but his mom’s advice stayed with him: The aura around you changes with a good haircut. A good cut makes you feel good. With that philosophy in mind, he started at the bottom by sweeping floors, but by the second day he knew he wanted to be styling celebrities in Los Angeles.

His break came through word-of-mouth. Starting with a friend in the newsroom, his name quickly spread. He began doing hair for network talent, awards shows, and eventually landed his first celebrity client: Gigi Hadid. From there, a snowball effect took over.

Matthew’s approach to hair is grounded in both skill and humility. He notes, “There is no one best look. You find faults in all of your work afterward. That’s what makes a good dresser a good dresser.”

Essentials for his styling? He starts with the hairdryer as the foundation, adds volumizing mousse, texture sprays, and always feels the hair before moving forward.

Award shows bring their own mix of pre-show rush and pressure of precision. Matthew’s kit weighs 75 pounds, packed with extensions, ribbons, pearls, and every hair accessory imaginable. He explains how some people plan, some don’t communicate so you have to come prepared for all.

One of Matthew’s standout roles is as a Dyson Global Styling Ambassador. He recalls the first time he saw the mockup Supersonic Dyson: a 3D-printed prototype with cables and a huge battery pack, years before it hit the market. Working closely with Dyson’s engineers, he helped refine tools like the Corrale and the new Supersonic R. The engineers are not there to stroke egos. They want to know what’s wrong, and they fix it. They love constructive criticism. He notes how technology is evolving and how stylists must adapt old habits to match these better-engineered tools.

Matthew also collaborated on The Scrungee, a smaller, innovative hair accessory brand. Designed for durability and style, the scrunchies feature infinite stretch and surface area, ensuring no dents in the hair. The launch party consisted of about 20 influencers in a spin class trying out the new product. Handmade by Ukrainian mothers working from home, Matthew helped refine the product for both functionality and aesthetics. It is hard navigating challenges like price point and distribution while balancing the debate between selling to a bigger brand or maintaining its boutique appeal.

For Matthew, hair is more than a career. It’s a craft, a science, and a way to make people feel confident. From cutting hair at 12 to running award-show rushes, creating a brand, and collaborating on cutting-edge tools, his journey is a reminder that passion, dedication, and adaptability are the ultimate keys to success.

In the beauty industry, many stylists are taught to focus solely on technical skills like mastering color, perfecting extensions, and learning the latest trends. But for Jennifer Alvarez, technical talent was only the beginning. Her journey from a small-town stylist to a seven-figure salon owner and salon business coach is a story of resilience. She learned to build something bigger than herself.

Jennifer grew up with limited resources, always feeling overshadowed and unsure of her place. After receiving her certification for her cosmetology career, she entered the industry at just 18,  still navigating adulthood and bouncing between salons while trying to find her footing. But a desire to create more for herself fueled her forward.

A turning point came when she booked her first bridal destination job. She was flown out to Catalina Island to do hair for an entire wedding party. That moment sparked something deeper: the belief that her talent could take her further than the walls of her small town. She launched her bridal company soon after and continued building from there.

But like many stylists-turned-owners, Jennifer hit a wall.

“I can’t do it all. I cannot wear all the hats and excel at it.”

It was this realization that shifted everything. She didn’t just need clients, she needed systems, support, and a team.

Jennifer admits that stepping back was one of the hardest lessons she had to learn. For years, she tried to manage everything herself, but she soon realized that holding tight to control was holding her back.

“You need to build the people, and the people will build the business.”

By investing in her team, training them, and trusting them, her salon began to thrive. And not just in revenue but also in shared purpose.

One of Jennifer’s most powerful philosophies is how she approaches leadership and compensation in a salon setting. She refuses to let stylists feel capped or limited by traditional structures.

“Yes, you are an employee, but I’m marketing you, I’m investing in your education, I’m mentoring you. If you want more, let’s just make the pie bigger. We can take this to another level, if you are willing and able to do that”

Instead of competition, she builds collaboration. This mindset creates space for stylists to grow and lead.

In 2023, Jennifer officially stepped away from behind the chair. Not because she wanted to leave the industry, but because she had a new mission of helping other salon owners do what she did, but faster and with less overwhelm.

Through coaching and her Beauty Business Game-Changer platform, she now helps salon owners build strong systems, grow confident teams, and create profitable businesses without burning out.

Her work is rooted in the core belief that you are not meant to do this alone. Jennifer wants every stylist and owner to know what she wishes someone told her earlier:

You are capable of more. Your past does not dictate your potential. Your business can grow when you grow.

Her journey is proof that success in the beauty industry is about far more than formulas and foils. It’s about having the correct systems in place, and the courage to step into leadership.

Hear Jennifer’s full story and salon growth strategies on this episode of Volume Up by The Tease.

A Blast From The Past

“My mom modeled, but she didn’t know how to do hair. I had one hairstyle until I started teaching myself, and then I started doing my friends’ hair.”

That early curiosity became a calling. What started as experimenting on her own hair quickly grew into styling her friends’. Soon, Suzette Boozer was bringing her curling iron to school and doing everyone’s hair– students, teachers, and even the security guards. Her confidence and growing skill got noticed fast. One night at a nightclub, a celebrity artist saw the hairstyles she had done for her friends; they exchanged numbers, and her path toward professional hairstyling began.

Working in the salon taught her the fundamentals. “In Brooklyn, you have ten salons on one block. It’s competition central. You always have to give it,” she says. “The salon made me.” There, she learned to work with every hair type, color, and style. Better yet, she learned how to listen. “Behind the chair, you become a psychologist. Active listening is key to a long career.”

Her creativity extends beyond styling. A natural teacher, she loves doing demos for clients to show them how her ideas come to life. She hopes to open a beauty school in the future to inspire the next generation of cosmetologists. That passion for education eventually led to a full-circle partnership with Dippity-Do, a nostalgic favorite from her childhood known for its shiny gel and bold results.

The Runway Approach

As her career expanded from salon floors to celebrity sets, her approach stayed the same: start by understanding what the client loves most, build trust, and then introduce new ideas. One standout example is the two-knot, tinsel-filled look she created for Gwen Stefani at Coachella, a style Gwen embraced after Suzette used a show-don’t-tell approach to pitch the idea.

Every look she creates is tailored to the moment: editorial styles belong on runways and red carpets, while everyday looks stay clean and effortless. Collaboration is essential when it comes to completing a look. Working closely with makeup artists and stylists ensures that every detail aligns for that cohesive, standout finish.

From Brooklyn’s competitive salon scene to Coachella stages and red carpets, Suzette has built a career rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. The lessons she learned behind the chair still guide her today, shaping every style she creates.

Jamaican-born and Brooklyn-bred, Karen Mitchell has always carried an entrepreneurial spirit. From watching her mother sell commodities in Jamaica to hustling raw hair extensions for friends and family in New York, she knew early on that business was in her DNA.

“I didn’t even recognize it as entrepreneurship at first,” she admits. “It was just a side hustle. I was selling raw hair on the side while working in fashion. But then the hair started paying my rent. When I got laid off, I took a leap of faith and decided to open a store.”

That leap became known as True Indian Hair, a brand now known for its authentic, high-quality extensions and wigs trusted by celebrities, stylists, and everyday women alike.

True represents authenticity and integrity. At the time, people were buying extensions that had fillers and synthetic blends. I wanted to give women the real thing. If I’m wearing it, I want the best, and I want you to have the best too.”

The brand is more than hair. In 2016, Mitchell launched True Strength, a completely complimentary makeover program for women experiencing severe hair loss, often due to cancer treatments.

Each October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 6 to 10 women are treated to free wigs, professional makeup, clothing, and dinner, provided by Mitchell and the volunteer stylists and makeup artists. “It’s near and dear to my heart,” she says. “It’s about community and restoring confidence.”

With celebrities like Rihanna and Cardi B among its clientele, True Indian Hair has been at the center of unforgettable pop culture moments, but it stays just as dedicated to the everyday woman who wants to trust the quality of what she’s wearing.

The company also faces real-world challenges like navigating tariffs and political shifts that affect product pricing. Still, Mitchell stays focused on transparency and education, always making sure clients know the value of what they’re investing in and how to navigate this time wisely.

Mitchell doesn’t take no for an answer. Despite tariffs and raised prices, she has plans of opening a store in Atlanta by 2026. And there’s more. A major project with an undisclosed partner is currently in the works and is set to expand the brand’s presence on a major platform.

Any guesses on who it may be? Stay tuned to find out and to hear more @volumeupbythetease and @nyhairqueen.
