Recently, “scalp care” has been a big buzzword in the haircare space, and for good reason: healthy scalps are the key to healthy hair. With that said, taking proper care of your scalp will leave you with an abundance of positive side effects, including hair growth, minimized discomfort and reduced flakiness. While it’s  never too late to get into scalp care, it may feel overwhelming to know where to start. To help you out, we’ve rounded up some of the best products on the market right now for achieving a healthy scalp. Ahead, take a look at our scalp product picks.

In recent years squalane has quickly become one of the must have ingredients in skincare. This multi purpose skin saviour not only moisturizes and hydrates skin but also helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as calming irritation and redness. If you are looking to improve skin texture, heal sunburn and UV damage, or simply keep your face plumped and glowing, including a squalane-based product into your skincare routine has numerous benefits.

What is Squalane?

Our own skin cells naturally produce a lipid called squalene (with an E) to moisturize and rejuvenate our skin. But by the time we hit our twenties and thirties our bodies ability to create squalene begins to decrease leaving our skin drier and more damaged looking. Squalene is also found in sugarcane, olives, fruits and shark liver. In order for it to be stabilized and used in skincare it needs to be hydrogenated and this is when it becomes squalane (with an A).

What are the benefits of Squalane?

The first step to a glowing complexion is hydrated skin. As our skin starts to slow down its natural production of squalene as we age, including skincare with squalane is essential in order for us to replenish and revitalize our skin to its former glory. Squalane is an amazing emollient so it locks in moisture to ensure the skin stays smooth and healthy. Packed full of antioxidants, squalane helps to protect against free radicals and also boost collagen production.

Here is a guide to the best squalane based skincare products to help you introduce this powerhouse ingredient into your beauty routine.

Which one of these products will you be adding to your skincare routine this fall?

It’s no secret that sulfates (also spelled sulphates) have a bad rep in the haircare world.  For years, the hair community has largely written of the well-known sudsing agent over its ability to strip way too much moisture from our strands. As a result, many consumers and brands alike have switched their focus to sulfate-free options that are believed to not only give a gentler clean, but also be all-around better for your hair.

However, one beauty brand that has refused to jump on the anti-sulfate bandwagon is none other than The Ordinary. In fact, the cult-favorite skincare brand recently expanded its haircare line with the launch of a trio of hair products that are made with the once-controversial ingredient. Much like their skincare products, this three-step haircare system, which includes the Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Body and Hair ($8.00), the Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner ($8.00), and the Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA For Scalp ($12.80), similarly takes a science-forward approach towards caring for our hair.

“This new category launch for The Ordinary is the epitome of the ‘skinification of hair’’ said The Ordinary’s Chief Scientific Officer, Prudvi Kaka, in a press statement. “Offering consumers sophisticated formulations and ingredients that would ordinarily be used in skincare and with true science and transparency at the forefront.”

By highlighting the use of sulfates in its new haircare line, The Ordinary ultimately hopes to help clear up the misconception that the haircare ingredient is actually harmful to our strands.

“A common myth about hair care that I see quite often is that certain ingredients are universally bad for hair,” Kaka shared. “This statement does not hold true as from a scientific point of view, one must take into account the concentration of use, the total formulation, the pre-existing behavior of the hair, and the specific hair concerns that need to be addressed. For example, the anti-sulphates messaging across the industry has labeled sulphates as harsh but, when formulated properly with appropriate concentration levels, they can create a mild and effective product.”

But, this new haircare system isn’t just helping The Ordinary to debunk long-held myths about sulfates, it’s also supporting Deceim’s (The Ordinary’s parent company) stance as “anti-clean”, which they announced last year in their “everything is chemicals” campaign.

“We believe that the beauty of science is its inquisitive nature — it never stops questioning,” the brand wrote in a blog post. “And at Deciem, we question the safety of our ingredients with the same energy that we apply to investigating their efficacy. In both cases, we turn to our fellow scientists for evidence, never settling for one single source, or buckling under the pressure of inaccurate claims propagated by fear-mongering.”

For those looking to get their hands on The Ordinary’s new haircare line, the range will be available in the U.S. at Ulta, Sephora, and the Deciem website, and is set to launch globally on March 8th.

What hair products did you discover on TikTok this year? Share with us below!

When it comes to discovering new hair tips and tricks, TikTok is a goldmine. The TikTok hair community is always clueing us in on the most genius hacks. While some of them have been pretty questionable — like using perfume as hair dye —  other hacks like the “bathrobe curls” trick and using rice water as a hair rinse have completely transformed the way consumers style and care for their hair.

At the moment, the latest hack to dominate “HairTok” involves adding one of skincare’s buzziest ingredients, hyaluronic acid, to your hair routine. Often hailed as a skincare hero for its moisturizing benefits, the miracle ingredient is being praised for its ability to hydrate and soften hair. In fact, hyaluronic acid has become so popular on the app that the hashtag #hylauronicacid has already garnered over 109.8 million views.

Saw a TikTok that said hair oil doesn’t moisturize your hair, only water can. So I tried Hyaluronic Acid! 🤯 #hyaluronicacid #hair #hairhack #dryhair

♬ Good as Hell – Lizzo

In a recent viral video titled, “I tried hyaluronic acid in my hair for two weeks and this is what happened,”  TikToker Kaitlyn Boyer (@kaitlynroundtree) applies The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% Serum to her strands for two weeks, documenting the progress. After applying the serum to her strands every night, her once dry and brittle hair looks noticeably silkier, smoother, and more hydrated. By the end of the two weeks, viewers are able to see that Boyer’s locks are in a much healthier state and she even shares in the video that her hair is “so soft and way more manageable — even my hair stylist asked me what I’d been doing.”

While Boyer’s video certainly makes the case for adding hyaluronic acid to our hair routine, you might be wondering if it can really moisturize your strands. Dean Mraz Robinson, a Connecticut-based board certified dermatologist, told Allure, “Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, and rather than moisturizing hair, it works by drawing moisture in from the environment. When applied to damp hair, HA can hold approximately 1,000 times its weight in water.” It’s this moisture-binding element of hyaluronic acid that makes it so beneficial for most hair types as it not only soaks up moisture but retains it, keeping hair hydrated.

With the temperatures continuing to drop, now is a great time to consider adding hyaluronic acid to your hair routine, especially as your strands start to become more dehydrated and brittle. To help you out, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite hair care products that contain hyaluronic acid.

Peptides are some of the most recognized ingredients in the beauty world — you’ll spot them in so many anti-aging, revitalizing, and repairing products on the market. They are short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks for necessary proteins in our skin, such as collagen, keratin, and elastin fibers. Dermatologist Michele Green explains that collagen improves the tone and texture of your skin.

Peptides act as a messenger in charge of stabilizing and transporting compounds essential to the production of protein. Thanks to this ability, the ingredient is now known to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This has been proven by many studies—one conducted by the International Journal of Molecular Science showed that in a span of two weeks, a significant decrease in wrinkles was observed after the use of peptides in skincare. Moreover, it confirms that topical application of peptides does work, as it increases dermal collagen expression.

But, skincare isn’t the only aspect of beauty peptides can be applied to. In this feature, we’ll be elaborating on the use of peptides in different steps in your beauty routine.

Peptides in Skincare

Peptides are one of the most buzzed ingredients in skin products. Besides the standard signaling peptides that we discussed earlier, some of the most common peptides in skincare are carrier peptides, neurotransmitter inhibitors, enzyme inhibitors, and structural peptides. To put it in simple terms, carrier peptides link up with other ingredients to help deliver them to your skin. Neurotransmitter and enzyme inhibitors on the other hand help stave off collagen breakdown and work to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Lastly, structural or keratin peptides allow the skin barrier to retain more water for plumper, firmer, and younger-looking skin.

Finding the right type of peptide-enriched product is crucial, too. For instance, opt for products that adhere longer on your skin like a moisturizer, eye cream, or serum, instead of a wash-away cleanser. Drunk Elephant’s Protini Powerpeptide Resurfacing Serum is a top pick because of how it sinks quickly into your skin, allowing you to enjoy the full benefits of its eleven signal peptides. For a drugstore alternative, you can also try the e.l.f. Holy Hydration Face Cream.

Peptides can strengthen the skin barrier, lock in moisture, repair damaged skin, and even contain antioxidants that can calm inflammation. Peptides can also be used in conjunction with vitamin C, however, it doesn’t mesh well with ingredients like AHAs. Consult your dermatologist about the best choice of products for your skin type.

Peptides in Haircare

Peptides are known to easily bind with copper enzymes, leading to the creation of copper peptide products. These are not only used for skincare but also do wonders for your hair. Copper peptides aid with new hair growth through the promotion of new blood vessels around the hair follicle. It also increases blood flow and oxygen circulation throughout the scalp. Plus, they are shown to have the ability to extend hair growth cycles and manifest the potential to thicken existing strands.

Copper peptides also fight inflammation and free radicals, which can cause damage to hair follicles — and, much like peptides in skincare, they can boost collagen and elastin levels in the scalp, countering scalp damage and increasing skin thickness.

Copper peptides also fight inflammation and free radicals, which can cause damage to hair follicles. And, much like peptides in skincare, they can boost collagen and elastin levels in the scalp, countering scalp damage and increasing skin thickness. Look out for copper peptides in the ingredients the next time you shop for hair care products. We recommend finding a hair serum like the Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density, or a hair mask such as the cult-favorite Elizavecca Collagen Ceramide Coating Protein Treatment.

Products that make use of these peptides are constantly undergoing research and development, and the market will continue to grow in future years. Already we can see more innovative creations, such as collagen peptide “beauty drinks,” and other forms of ingestible peptide products.

Always make sure you check product labels and ingredient lists to ensure that they are regulated and that you’re getting the most out of your products.

“This mascara is a game-changer! Not only does it provide length and volume, but it adds a little curl and perfectly combs out my lashes as well. Not to mention, there’s no fall out or clumping. Lash Paradise is known as a dupe for the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara, but spoiler: I think it’s better!” —E.L.

“If I could use this more than 1-2x weekly, I would. Everyone (even me) knows that the key to good skin is exfoliating. This exfoliator sloughs off the gross stuff with a ‘100% plant-based, biodegradable alternative to microbeads.’ Plastic microbeads are gross, too. Get this stuff.”  —J.L.

Name a more desperate moment than fighting a zit that just won’t go away. You try to play nice with your normal routine, but when that doesn’t work, you break out the big guns. Let us stop you right there. Nothing beats a reliable spot treatment. However, some of those “Hail Mary” products actually do more harm than good.

A bad spot treatment can make acne worse by irritating and overdrying skin; and despite these products appearing to kill off acne, their harsh ingredients leave lasting damage. Instead, keep pores clear with regular exfoliation and, if a blemish does trigger your “fight or flight” response, consider swapping for a safer, gentler option.

Using Burt’s Bees Herbal Complexion Stick?

Burt’s Bees Herbal Complexion Stick was once a personal go-to for painful, hormonal breakouts. At a glance, the product boasts “99.9% natural ingredients” and tea tree oil which sold me in my naïve skincare youth. Tea tree oil is a buzzy ingredient rumored to have acne-fighting superpowers (little research has actually been done). So, imagine my disappointment when I returned to this old fave to find the first ingredient was, in fact, alcohol denat.

I’m not anti-alcohol in my skincare –– the ingredient can be used safely as an emulsifier, preservative and degreasing agent in the right concentrations. But, as the first ingredient in a formula, denatured alcohol can be extremely drying and irritating, plus damage to your gentle skin barrier. It may get rid of that pesky zit, but lasting damage far outweighs the benefits.

Replace with Versed Nix It Complexion Solution.

Versed has made waves this year with non-toxic, vegan and cruelty-free products available at drugstore prices. The Nix It Complexion Solution is one of their many cult-favorites using salicylic acid as an equally effective and popular ingredient as tea tree oil. However, this formula cuts the acid with glycerin, oils (including tea tree) and a lower, less irritating concentration of the active to give you safe acne-fighting power.

Dot this dry-oil formula directly onto the problem area morning and night. The fast-absorbing, no-residue solution can sit under or over makeup to soothe redness, fight bacteria and prevent new blemishes from forming.

Using Clean & Clear Advantage Spot Treatment?

Like Burt’s Bees, the Advantage Spot Treatment from Clean & Clear disguises overdrying as a breakout solution. While the first ingredient in this formula is also alcohol, the ingredients get worse down the list: including fragrance and parabens. There’s good reason skincare enthusiasts have taken such a strong stance against these ingredients.

Although fragrance improves user experience, it’s potentially dangerous for our health. Not only can they be potentially irritating, but some components have also been associated with cancer, reproductive issues and allergies. While parabens, typically used as preservatives, are another cosmetic no-no. Recent studies have suggested a relationship between parabens and hormone disruption, fertility & reproductive issues, negative birth outcomes and increased risk of cancer.

Replace with The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%.

A safer alternative is the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% solution from the one and only The Ordinary. This product is free of nasty parabens and fragrance, plus alcohol, silicone, animal byproducts and gluten. The Ordinary creates extremely effective products with super small markups. In fact, this treatment sells for only $5.90 USD (compared $8.69 for the Clean & Clear option).

This formula’s superhero is obviously niacinamide (i.e. Vitamin B3). A gentler, safer active, B3 chemically exfoliates the skin to reduce the appearance of blemishes and congestion. The ingredient also rivals Vitamin C as one of the top brighteners blessing today’s skincare collections. Zinc, on the other hand, has skin-healing and rejuvenating abilities when applied on the skin or ingested. In this formula, Zinc is used to stabilize the Niacinamide.

Using the Tweezerman No-Slip Skincare Tool?

As Lizzo said, truth hurts. So, we’re here to tell you: that extraction tool that’s oh-so-satisfying to use needs to go. No matter how easy Dr. Pimple Popper makes it look, taking zits into your own hands is never a good idea. Everyone knows that picking leads to scars and infection. And although tools can be more hygienic when cleaned properly, applying physical pressure to breakouts still poses risks of scarring and bruises.

Tools like the Tweezerman No-Slip Skincare Tool apply pressure to breakouts to force sebum out of pores. Although they remove the existing infection, these tools also open wounds with the potential to become reinfected. Plus, using this tool before breakouts are “mature” enough to be removed can result in greater pressure and therefore, more damage. Leave it to the pros to use this tool and, instead, find a safer alternative to tend to your breakouts.
