When you’ve had the groundbreaking and all-around legendary career that Serena Williams has had, it’s only right that you go out with a sartorial bang—which is exactly what she did for the final tennis tournament of her career.
On Monday evening, the 23-time Grand Slam tennis champion, who announced her retirement from the sport in the September issue of Vogue earlier this month, played the first match of her final US Open, beating out Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
For the history-making tennis moment, Williams sparkled and shined in a custom diamond-encrusted Nike dress that she designed herself and diamond-laden Nike sneakers that were made in collaboration with Serena Williams Jewelry.
To reflect the blingy details of her outfit, the tennis star’s hair was also given the same sparkly treatment as well. William’s bouncy, caramel-colored curls were swept back into a ponytail with crystal-encrusted head and given a touch of sparkle by none other than the “Hair MacGyver” herself, celebrity hairstylist and Maui Moisture Ambassador Nikki Nelms.
Nelms is known industry-wide for making Black hair sparkle and now she’s done it quite literally with the addition of the glittering Swarovski hair crystals that she added to William’s ponytail. “@serenawilliams is an icon. She’s been shining her whole life…her whole career,” Nelms wrote on Instagram about the iconic look. “Last night her hair did too.”
And, while the hair crystals definitely played an important part in creating William’s history-making hair, the secret behind her curls diamond-worthy shine is thanks to Maui Moisture. Nelms prepped Williams’ hair with Maui Moisture’s Curl Quench Curl Milk ($9.00) as the first ingredient to ensure she had hydrated curls. This leave-in milk helped define Williams’ curls, added bounce, and kept frizz at bay before her hair was pulled into a pony. Even after her ponytail was secured into place, Nelms ran even more of the leave-in milk through the hair for extra volume and definition.
This ultra-shiny embellished ponytail that Nelms styled for Williams’ is a total grand slam in our opinion and we can’t wait to see what other killer looks she dreams up for the rest of the US Open.
