The Best Expert-Approved Shampoos to Gift This Holiday Season

10/28/2022

Whether you are on the hunt for a new shampoo for yourself or would like to gift one this holiday season, it can be tough deciding which one to purchase with so many choices available. Since making a decision can be such a head-scratcher, we decided to bring in the experts.

According to hairstylist, Heather Davis, when looking for a shampoo and conditioner that is right for you, you have to start with a few questions. First, is your hair dry, oily, fine, or thick? You will also have to dig a little deeper if your hair is color-treated.

However, keep in mind: “Professional products are the best option regardless of what type of hair you have, the range of options is large and more often than not you will be able to find the right mixture that works for your hair type,” said Davis.

If you are someone with dry hair, you should consider the Joico brand. “The two recommended options for shampoo and conditioner would be Joico Moisture Recovery or the Joico HydraSplash,”Davis said.  These products help replenish moisture, and they also restore smoothness and elasticity, too.

My Moxy serves as a great natural option for those with dry hair. This shampoo and conditioner combo is known for leaving your hair hydrated minus the frizz. Specifically, the My Moxy’s clear conditioner is recognized for locking in moisture and the shampoo removes everyday build-up.

For those with dull hair:

Struggling with dull hair? Here’s the thing: “Dull hair can be caused by different situations so it would be best to first understand why you have dull hair,” said Davis. In most cases, you will want to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo a few times, that way you can remove any impurities that may be on it. Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 is ideal for that. Then after using that for a few washes, Joico Defy Damage shampoo and conditioner will help bring dull  hair back to life.

For those with color-treated hair:

Did you add a little color to your hair? If so, speak to your hairstylist about which one you should purchase! But, if you are heading to the salon soon, make sure you ask about Wella Invigo Brilliance shampoo and conditioner. These products are known for helping you maintain  and protect  your colored hair.

For those with thinning hair:

Now if your hair is thinning, Davis recommends the Nioxin line. They have a selection of products that are suited for those with fine and or thinning hair. Their products are known for addressing different levels of hair thinning. They also aid in other concerns such as hair breakage, sensitive scalp, and dandruff.

For those with damaged hair:

If your hair is damaged, Olaplex is worth checking out. According to Davis, while it has helped

some people  immeasurably, others have said they didn’t see too much of an improvement. Of course, we are all different, but this one is still worth asking your hairstylist about! Olaplex is recognized for strengthening hair and adding softness.. However, if you would like to explore some other options, you could also ask your stylist about: Wella FusionPlex, Matrix Total Results So Long Damage, and Biolage Strength Recovery.

Still, confused about which ones you should try? Here are a few pro tips to consider:

  1. First, next time you are in the salon ask your hairstylist what products they recommend for your hair specifically. Their recommendation should be able to clear up any confusion you might be having.
  1. According to Davis, when trying out a new shampoo and conditioner it’s also a good idea to get a sample or travel size. She noted, “That way you can ensure it’s going to work without spending money and possibly wasting it if it doesn’t work for your hair type.”
  1. “Finally, please remember professional shampoos and conditioners do cost more but they go a lot farther in usage versus a drugstore brand,” said Davis.
