Jessica Havermale, didn’t follow a linear path to hair. Starting beauty school during the pandemic, she ultimately found a home in JCPenney Salon in Glendale, Arizona, where she is now a Senior Stylist! See what advice she has for new stylists, the styling products she can’t get enough of, the support she gets from JCPenney Salon and so much more.

The Tease: How did you get into hair?

Jessica Havermale: I found my way back to coming into school, going into hair… right when COVID started. So I was in beauty school during COVID, and that was a trip. I’m so glad that I made my way back into school. So for anybody that is thinking that you’re too old for it and you can’t do it, you can absolutely go back and you can absolutely do it again.

Favorite thing about being a hairstylist?

Havermale: There are a lot of things that I thoroughly enjoy. My favorite part is meeting new people. I love talking to people. I love getting to know who you are as a person and kind of really getting into that part of it.

Who is your ideal client?

Havermale: My ideal client is somebody who comes in that has some type of an idea of what they want to do with their hair, whether it’s just a cut, just a color. A shape, a style that they’re going for, a color that they would like to see or a color they want to get, stay away from. Somebody that’s going to be open and willing to have changes and go outside of the norm.

You are on a deserted island and can only bring 3 beauty products… What are they?

Havermale: If I’m on a deserted island. I’m not bringing beauty products. But if I had to bring beauty products on my deserted island, I would definitely say my heat protectant for sure. Probably my skinny serum and definitely my Redken leave in treatment. Absolutely love it. I use it on everybody. It is my favorite.

It smells good. I won’t put it on my head if it doesn’t smell good!

Favorite hair trend right now?

Havermale: I really enjoy the wolf cut, um, or the modern shag, I guess. It’s just fun. You can style it every different way, so each person can have that same style, but wear it so that it’s personable to them.

What are the hottest fashion colors?

Havermale: Hottest color for fashion colors definitely has to be, like, a magenta, a neon pink, something just bright and vibrant that says, I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.

What was the first product you ever owned?

Havermale: The first product I ever owned was probably my hair dryer. Or a curling iron. One of the two.

Any advice for new stylists?

Havermale: My advice for a new stylist is: Do not be afraid to do it. Do it scared! Put a smile on your face and do it scared.

Would you recommend working at JCPenney Salon?

Havermale: So I really think that everybody should come work for JCPenney. The JCPenney salon has so many benefits for new stylists, especially.

We have some great programs that are coming out with a designer and training program where you work directly with a master stylist. to show you different steps and different techniques for perms, haircuts, shampooing, all of the little things that you might not remember that you learned in school or you may not have learned them in school. The benefits are amazing.

How does JCPenney Salon support you as a stylist?

Havermale: JCPenney supports me so much… There is continuing education. We have online resources that we can go to. If there’s ever questions about products that we have, there is always knowledge readily available.
