Debate: vivid colorists vs. blonding/natural colorists. Why do we separate ourselves in these categories? Is it more important to try to please everyone and have everyone like you or to find the people that genuinely see you and your talent? Kayla Boyer talks on the separation between vivid colorists and natural colorists that have caused stylists to find people and companies that really see them beyond beautiful blonde hair.
Kayla Boyer tried color in her own hair for the first time in high school. Once you go vivid, you never go back. Since then Kayla has graduated cosmetology school, opened two salons in Minneapolis (yes, TWO salons) and partnered with big brands like Pravana.
Tune into this week’s episode of Volume Up by The Tease to hear Kayla talk about all things color, being prepared for anything, and how to grow your portfolio. You don’t want to miss this one.
“If you want to do someone’s hair for free, if they’re willing to, you know, let you practice, then go for it. If you need them to pay for your product, then you just give them a flat fee. That was kind of like how I started creating and getting more portfolio work.”
“I align with them and they see me, you know, they see me more than just as a hairstylist. They see that I have a passion in certain areas. I’d rather be with someone like that.”
“If you’re going to open up a salon, make sure you’re prepared for anything! I didn’t know that was going to happen, but I felt prepared for it because I set myself up to have a backup plan or whatever…there’s problems everyday that you kind of have to go through but just making sure you have the right team to help you through it and all that like, is so important.”
