Brendnetta Ashley’s Texture and Wig Tips for ‘Upping’ Venus Williams’ Hair Game

10/26/2024

We love having return guests on the Volume Up pod, especially when they have some exciting projects to share. Brendnetta Ashley is BACK, and we got the inside scoop on all things related to her recent collaboration with Schwarzkopf for the “Up Your Hair Game” campaign featuring Venus Williams.

Growing up surrounded by hairstylists – both grandmothers, a cousin, and an aunt – you could say hair runs in her veins. She recalls being a “shop baby”, spending after-school hours and weekends in the salon, even though, at first, she jokes about not being all that keen on the idea of being a stylist.

But by senior year, she was all in. Ashley fully embraced the world of cosmetology, diving into the magic of hair and mastering the salon dynamics that would shape her career.

Ashley emphasizes the importance of understanding all types of hair textures, noting that as our society becomes more diverse, stylists must adapt and embrace this change.

Her commitment to mastering her craft extends beyond just the basics; she recognized the vital role that color theory plays in hairstyling. This foundational knowledge empowers her to create stunning results, especially when working with textured hair.

“Think about your clothes. You have cotton, silk, wool, polyester. All of them can create something beautiful, but you have to treat them differently…That is the exact same thing when it comes to color and coloring textured hair versus straight hair. You have to know and understand what fabric you are working with”.

This knowledge was showcased in her recent collaboration with Schwarzkopf for the “Up Your Hair Game” campaign starring Venus Williams.

The campaign allowed Ashley to celebrate cultural identity and self-expression through hair. She states the news of this opportunity “took [her] to a moment of like, all my hard work is paying off”.

Beyond the excitement of collaborating with Venus, she loved that the campaign celebrated wigs as stylish accessories, affirming that “there should be no shame in wearing one”.

Ashley encourages aspiring stylists to “put your work out there” and “share your story”, emphasizing that authenticity and relatability can unlock unexpected opportunities and inspire others in the beauty community.
