Clayton Hawkins Breaks Down ‘Too Much’ Star Meg Stalter’s Retro Hairstyle

07/14/2025

We can’t get enough of “Too Much” star, and queer icon, Meg Stalter. For the recent LA screening of her much-anticipated show, the Lena Dunham-created comedy series for Netflix, Stalter embraced main character energy with a stripey bodysuit, slung low on one shoulder, giant belt and big, retro-inspired hair by frequent collaborator Clayton Hawkins. Everything!

The Tease connected with Hawkins, who’s equally “obsessed with this look AND Meg” to understand exactly how it came together. Hawkins generously shared his influences and exactly how he created this look, including products and tools.

Scroll for the breakdown. Thank us later!

Get the Look:

  1. “I started by spraying Meg’s damp hair with my favorite amika frizz-me-not hydrating anti-frizz spray and then blowing her out with my L’Oréal Airlight Pro and a boar bristle brush.
  2. Once her hair was dry, I pulled it back into a snatched ponytail. I then cut up some hair donuts and used them as hair padding around the ponytail to make a giant ‘base.’
  3. I then grabbed some human hair wefts from Donna Bella Hair and pinned them to the giant donut to create a voluminous 1960s ‘fall’ hair piece.
  4. Once it was secure, I trimmed the hair shoulder length, used a curling iron to flip it up, and sprayed amika Headstrong hairspray to lock it all in. The result is Marlo Thomas meets John Waters meets the Ronettes.”

Be my little baby! If you recreate Meg Stalter’s (by way of Clayton Hawkins) very Ricki-Lake-in-‘Hairspray’-coded hairstyle, tag @readthetease on Instagram or TikTok — we want to see!
