It may be brutal out here, but Olivia Rodrigo is helping us all feel just a little bit better with the surprise-release of a new music video for her Sour album opener, “Brutal”.
Every bit as chaotic as the rebellious track, the corresponding video — which was directed by Canadian artist Petra Collins, is a candy-colored, angst-ridden masterpiece, complete with anime face-filters, early 2000s nostalgia, and scene-stealing wig moments. In true “choose your character” style (she even sampled the Super Smash Bros. Melee!), Rodrigo cycles through eight distinct characters in the nearly three-minute clip, including but not limited to a pop star, a ballerina, an influencer, and a newscaster —each with a stylized hairstyle to match courtesy of the singer’s go-to hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. From a power blue bob to platinum blonde waves, Rodrigo dons nearly every color of the rainbow, proving there isn’t a single look that she can’t pull off.
