Gucci 2020 Collection Tackles Toxic Masculinity through Hair and Fashion

On January 14th, Gucci’s Fall Winter 2020 runway show wrapped up Men’s Fashion Week in Milan. Attendees, among them Jared Leto and Tyler the Creator, were treated to a playful yet innovative presentation. This year’s creative director, Alessandro Michele used hair and fashion to defy gender norms.

Using unisex clothing and a gender-fluid theme, Michele showed the importance of dismantling conventional masculinity. Of the show, he states, “it’s time to celebrate a man who is free to practice self-determination, without social constraints, without authoritarian sanctions, without suffocating stereotypes.”

In addition to fashion, hair has the power to tear down barriers of gender. This was shown through the hairstyles accompanying the clothing, which included ponytails adorned with hair ribbons, long locks and short bobs.

Known for his bold hair creations, UK hairstylist Paul Hanlon (who has worked with the likes of Calvin Klein and Harry Styles) brought the lewks to the runway. And with the help of hair colorist Brad Baker, the two were able to craft ground-breaking hairstyles for the gender-bending show.

By using Wella and Olaplex, Baker and Hanlon were able to bring incredible color to the models’ hair.
