Hair Gems Are the Latest Y2K Hair Trend Taking Over TikTok

07/21/2022

Our collective obsession with Y2K hair is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Case in point: hair gems are suddenly everywhere right now. Those little sparkly hair accents that we all couldn’t get enough of during the early aughts have been seen all over the runway during Fall/Winter 2022 Fashion Week, on stars like Alicia Keys and Saweetie, and have made an appearance on HBO’s hit show Euphoria.

Even TikTok can’t seem to resist the sparkly appeal of the hair jewel trend. The hashtag #hairgems currently has generated over 54 million views on the platform already and videos of TikTok users, like Kirsty Elizabeth, demonstrating how to use a gem hair stamper have quickly gone viral.

And, it’s easy to see why. While hair gems certainly give off a ‘90s-meets-early-aughts vibe, they are a relatively easy way to elevate a simple hairstyle. So, if you (or your clients) are looking to add some sparkle to your hair regiment, it might be time to get your hands on a hair blinger of your own—or at the very least some hair glue and a handful of rhinestones.

Ahead, see a few of our favorite ways to incorporate hair gems into your next hair look.

Jeweled Baby Hairs

As model Joyjah Estrada proves with this fun look, hair gems are the perfect accessory to dress up your edges. Plus, we can’t deny how amazing her rhinestone baby hairs look when paired with her zigzag part and cornrows.

Rhinestone Pigtail Braids

Take it from hairstylist Dina DiPietro, there’s no such thing as too much bling. DiPietro jazzed up influencer Remi Bader’s classic pigtails with some rhinestone gems that perfectly matched the ones lining her eyes.

Bedazzled Money Piece

Tap into Barbiecore by elevating a hot pink money piece with an array of colorful hair gems like hairstylist Tori Rogers.

 Rhinestone Half-Up Half-Down

Lean into the Euphoria vibes with a Maddy Perez-worthy half-up half-down ‘do bedazzled with eye-catching gems. We love that hairstylist Linda Ha added some swooped baby hairs to finish off the look.
