Here’s How The Hair Industry Is Tapping Into Pantone’s 2023 Color Of The Year Pick

Not your average purple

If you think you’ve seen a resurgence of lavender popping up over social media of late, you’re not imagining it. Trend forecasting firm WGSN predicted that the shade would be crowned the official 2023 Pantone Color of the Year. To be a little more specific, the shade is officially referred to as “Digital Lavender” — a tone that is sure to invoke feelings and serenity and creativity. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing a lot more of the majestic shade.

A quick Instagram scroll under the hashtag #digitallavender shows that this is not your average purple. It’s definitely not muted or dusty. Think of digital lavender as the cooler, younger and edgier Gen Z sibling of millennial pink.

As to be expected, the hair industry is always ahead of the game with the latest color trends. The candy coloured hue has recently been spotted on models at NYFW. Edgy lilac root pops and chic pastel bobs have graced the shows of Prabal Gurung and Collina Strada. Consider this your reminder to stock up on the shade before the client requests start to come in!

Surprisingly, the shade is more versatile than it looks. If your clients are not ready to take on a full head of amethyst, then there are numerous other options for the trend to be incorporated —from soft and subtle lilac balayages to a full head of violaceous strands. There’s something for everyone, even the shrinking violets (no pun intended).

Nevada Raffaele, a stylist and colorist at Bleach London Los Angeles tells The Tease “Lavender is easy in that it tends to leave behind a nice blonde, but it does require a very light and even base. Like all cool tones, it is likely to “grab” in areas with high porosity (uneven base)”. Rafellle recommends the Bleach London Violet Skies range which includes shampoo, conditioner and a lavender grey toner.

Ombré Wash-Out

We love how @pasteldreamhair has intensified the colour at the root, thus creating a soft romantic blended ombré effect.

Violet Pop

This classic icy blonde bob is given a total switch up with a violet pop. Colorist @john.n115 used Arctic Fox products to achieve a subtle flash of this gorgeous baby soft hue.

Violet Flame Bob

We’re getting some major cosplay vibes from this super-cool electric violet bob wig worn by @mbalimkh_.

Backlight Glow

Can we talk about how utterly obsessed we are with this dark brown lavender combo by @popcoulter_? This bold balayage is absolutely striking. Hello, mermaid vibes.

Lavender & Peach Combo

@mariahthestylistt mixed up peachy strawberry blonde with lavender and the result is gorgeous (and gives us candy cravings). The addition of soft beach waves to this look is the perfect finishing touch.
