Premiere season for “Practical Magic 2” is bringing some seriously witchy hair energy, and actress Joey King’s look for the Los Angeles premiere is proof. Celebrity hairstylist and frequent collaborator Rena Calhoun pulled from early Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite imagery to create something soft, romantic, and just mysterious enough to nod to the film’s supernatural themes — all while letting King’s structured, corseted gown do the talking.
“I was inspired by early Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite imagery. I loved the softness of the texture and the romantic, almost untouched feeling of the hair. We weren’t looking to literally recreate Victorian or Pre-Raphaelite hair, but more to pull from the lightness and airiness of the texture and reinterpret it in a more modern way. There’s also something about that softness that feels otherworldly and mysterious, which is a nod to the witchy undertones of this look and some of the other press looks. The dress is absolutely the moment here, and it’s so structured, with the corsetry, lace, and dramatic silhouette. I thought contrasting that with hair that feels raw created a balance that keeps the overall look from feeling overly polished or too literal,” Calhoun shares.

- “I first prepped her hair with the HONEYQUE Deep Repair Shampoo and HONEYQUE Deep Repair Treatment. Joey is about midway through press, and with her hair being heat-styled almost every day, maintaining its health and integrity is really important.
- After towel-drying, on damp hair, I applied the HONEYQUE Deep Repair 2WAY Hair Mist to lock in hydration and protect the hair from heat.
- Around the front, I used flat setting clips to sculpt and shape the hair to frame her face. I wanted this area to feel a little more intentional than the rest while still keeping the softness of the overall look.
- With the setting clips still in place, I diffused the rest of the hair with the ion Luxe Turbosonic Hair Dryer, using my hands to encourage her natural texture as it dried. I wanted to preserve that natural fluff and airiness that I love about Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite hair, rather than smoothing the hair out or making it feel too silky and polished.
- Once the hair was completely dry, I used the ion Luxe Infrared 1.25” Curling Iron to stretch out the natural curl pattern, working in large sections. Rather than creating a new curl, I used the iron to elongate the existing texture into loose, irregular bends and then brushed out the wave even more.
- Once everything cooled, I gently broke up the hair with my hands allowing some of the natural texture and fluff to come back through. I wanted the movement to feel irregular and almost untouched rather than like a traditional polished wave.
- I refined the sculpting around her face with a smaller BabyLiss Pro 1″ Ultra-Sleek Stainless Steel Styling Iron and to finish, locked it all in with a lightweight hair spray.”
