I’ve always been fascinated with braids and styling, and when I started cosmetology school, I knew braids were something I really wanted to learn! Still, I never knew it would be such a big part of who I am now.
I’ve been in the hair industry for two years, and I’ve come such a long way. When you understand the basic techniques of braids and you start playing around with placement, elevation, over- direction, etc., the possibilities are endless.
I love to create intricate braided looks that you don’t see every day –– something that you look at and think “How in the world did he do that?” I also love to create beautiful styles that incorporate unconventional materials into my braided styles, such as ribbons, mesh and cords. Sometimes, I look at a piece of material and get inspiration to create a look from it and start with just that. Other times, it just comes from my imagination.
I put a lot of time into creating my vision and just playing around with it, sort of trial and error until I’m happy with how it looks. For my more intricate creations, it can take me up to 4-5 hours. There have even been times where I’ve worked on something for 3 or more hours and have still not been happy with it. Then, I just start from scratch! I never want to put something out there that I’m unhappy with, so I’d rather start over until my heart is content.
I love being able to put out new and exciting content for myself and others. I love seeing recreations of braids I’ve done, because it really makes me feel humble to have people be inspired by me and my work.
Some tips on what I typically do with my braids is fluffing them out to give the illusion of a bigger braid. This is a great way to fill up an empty space. Also, be open minded with your work. Be willing to tweak or improvise if something doesn’t look the way you imagined it and stay patient. A clear mind is key!
I do a lot of my braiding at night when I can just unwind and sorta zen out for the day. Braiding Is my way of relaxing while listening to some music. I’m excited to continue creating new looks and push my boundaries and my comfort zone. I’m also looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me.
