Hair artist John Novotny was among a handful of others who, alongside Charlie Le Mindu, took the concept of wearable art to the next level in Chappell Roan’s latest music video, “The Subway.”
Partnering with fashion designer Todd Thomas, Novotny created a custom-colored hair jacket and skirt set to fit into the surreal music video concept that’s driven forward by memory, grief, and rebirth. High-drama, high-glam.
In all, the long sleeve hair jacket and skirt look was composed of 35 bundles of curly human hair, 3 lace closures, and 2 wigs.

Each strand started as honey blonde, as seen in Novotny’s Instagram post, then was expertly color-matched to Chappell Roan’s red using Schwarzkopf Professional’s IGORA ROYAL color line and finished with Schwarzkopf Professional haircare products. Scroll to see exactly which shades!
