Hairdressing today is so different from what the career was 15 years ago. Why? Social media has become an extraordinary tool to showcase the work of hairdressers to people in places we have only dreamed about going to.
When I first started out, we would have a physical portfolio of our work to use for job interviews and other opportunities. Now, it’s all on our timeline on Instagram!
The same goes for when a new client comes into the salon. Now, they know so much more about what they want to achieve with inspirational pictures and more general knowledge from Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok.
This has helped create a wonderful, warm community of like-minded people who come together and support each other’s work. I myself have made so many amazing friends through Instagram. This platform, in particular, has become an amazing tool for colorists and stylists to share education with each other –– especially with new features like IGTV and Reels.
I have always had a huge interest and passion in education. Then, three years ago, after many requests, I started sharing more educational posts on my timeline. This made me fall more in love with helping other colorists further their education. Last year, I decided to start my own online educational platform and host workshops. Since then, I haven’t looked back, and it’s been wonderful.
At the start of the pandemic, when salons were closed and hair and beauty events were cancelled, I saw so many stylists and colorists offering free education. It reminded me of how far we’ve come. Social media is now our go-to method for communicating, learning and interacting in the hair and beauty world. It’s an incredible tool for free advertising and education, and I’m excited to see what else the future brings.
