These Iconic Hairstyles From Our Fave Asian Celebs Deserve a Second Look

05/12/2021

As conversations continue to shift towards greater representation and advocating for Asian lives and the #StopAAPIHate movement is becoming more widespread, we are taking the time to celebrate Asian culture and influence, particularly as it relates to the hair space. Over the last few years, Asian stars like Sandra Oh, Mindy Kaling, Gemma Chan have blessed us up with so many dazzling and truly memorable hairstyles that we feel deserve to be recognized. In the spirit of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite hair looks that Asian celebs have worn to grace the red carpet and our Instagram feeds.

Vanessa Hudgens

One of the highlights of seeing Vanessa Hudgens serve as a So You Think You Can Dance judge in 2018 was definitely seeing what stunning hairstyle she would rock next. We love this Princess Jasmine-worthy bubble pony that hairstylist Chad Wood created for the star. The red thread that he wrapped around her locks perfectly matches her bold fuschia dress.

Awkwafina

Awkwafina came in looking red hot at the 2019 SAG Awards. While there was so much to love about her vibrant look, we can’t help but fawn over her sleek and chic straightened strands styled by hairstylist Lacy Redway.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka Chopra Jonas was certainly one to watch out for on the 2019 Met Gala red carpet. Playing into the gala’s camp theme, the star went for major volume rocking a crown full of teased curls that came courtesy of hairstylist Bok-Hee.

Hailee Steinfeld

No matter if she’s wearing her hair up or down, we can always count on Hailee Steinfeld to deliver us with a seriously stylish hair look. The star looked particularly stunning sporting a slicked-back pony created by hairstylist Gregory Russell.

Janel Parrish

Janel Parrish gave off major mermaid vibes when she debuted dip-dyed electric blue locks in 2019. To take her look to the next level, she entrusted hairstylist Glenn Nutley to add some wavy texture to her strands.

Sandra Oh

Who knew that making history could look so dang good? For her historic night at the 2019 Golden Globes, Sandra Oh became the first Asian woman to not only host the award show, but also win Best Actress in a Drama TV Series as well as multiple Golden Globes awards — all while rocking a super chic side swept curled updo styled by hairstylist Ted Gibson.

Shay Mitchell

Literally no one wears a topknot quite like Shay Mitchell. The star and her hairstylist Jesus Guerrero have us wanting to throw our hair up in a slightly messy bun just about every day now.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling hit us all with the ultimate hair switch-up at the 2019 Met Gala when she traded in her signature brunette locks for platinum blonde waves. To carry out this incredible blonde transformation, the actress turned to hairstylist Marc Mena.

Jamie Chung

Jamie Chung looked stunning as ever at this year’s SAG Awards with her blonde money piece styled by hairstylist Peter Butler. Honestly, we’re still daydreaming about her beautiful waves!

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen not only proved that orange is definitely her color at the 2020 Grammy’s Awards, but also that a lob is always a good idea! We are big fans of the loose waves and middle part that her hairstylist Jen Atkin gave the star.

Gemma Chan

There was so much to love about Gemma Chan’s 2019 Met Gala after-party hair look — from the lengths to her hot pink dip-dyed stands and that blinged-out hair clip. According to her hairstylist Owen Gould, this cool-girl hair transformation is the result of a wig.

Lana Condor

Lana Condor’s 2019 Met Gala hairstyle continues to live in my mind rent-free because it’s honestly just that good. For the big night, her hairstylist Matt Fugate dreamed up a romantic  curled updo that looks straight out of a fairytale.
