With the ‘National Shutdown’ Hours Away, a Hair Brand Enters the Chat

01/30/2026

Public outrage at the killings of Alex Pretti, Renee Good, Keith Porter Jr., and Silverio Villegas González by federal agents, as well as countless, documented examples of cruelty and abuse against non-citizens and citizens alike by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Border Patrol and others has reached a tipping point. On Friday, January 30th, there is a call for a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping — and voting no to additional ICE funding — what’s being called a “national shutdown,” or a general strike modeled after the one that took place on January 23rd in the Twin Cities.

Like others across the country, individual salon professionals, organizations run by salon professionals, and salons are taking to social media to express their opposition to ICE and other federal agencies engaging in raids across the country, and since its announcement earlier this week, many are indicating their support for the “shutdown.” While beauty brands were quick to do the same, hair brands, with the notable exception of Latina-founded Tecuane and Rizos Curls, both of which were vocal in supporting the Latine and immigrant communities in Southern California during ICE operations in 2025 and have continued to do so in 2026, have largely stayed out of the conversation. Until now.

Earlier today, hair color brand Good Dye Young took a public stand.

In an Instagram post, the brand, founded by singer Hayley Williams and Brian O’Connor, wrote: “GDY is offline tomorrow, strike if you can, support if you can’t. Swipe for resources and how you can help.” The post calls for the abolishment of ICE and participation in tomorrow’s national shutdown or “strike,” provides instructions to contact the US Senate and shares a list of companies to consider boycotting for contracting with ICE as well as alternatives. It ends with a note about the importance of taking a break as needed and then getting back to the work of changing things for the better.

As of 10PM PST, the post has nearly 16.7k likes, 1,845 reposts and hundreds of comments sharing appreciation for the brand’s position.
