Move Over Millennial Pink — Gen Z Green is Trending

01/27/2022

Remember back in 2017 when millennial pink was literally everywhere? You couldn’t escape the influence of the rosy hue as it infiltrated nearly every sector of our lives from our wardrobe and interiors to even food and our beloved hair products. While millennial pink will always hold a special place in our hearts, it appears that a new shade is coming for its throne. No, we’re not talking about “Very Peri”

Enter Gen Z green — the bright and bold plant-inspired hue that we all suddenly can’t get enough of. Much like it’s popular predecessor, Gen Z green is set to dominate just about every creative industry. The buzzy shade has already majorly impacted fashion (Bottega Veneta’s striking green branding may come to mind) and the interior design space. Now, it’s come for the hair world.

A slew of hair brands have been quick to embrace all shades of green — from Shrek and Kermit green to mint, sage, and emerald—when it comes to their packaging and branding. Most notably, the Issa Rae-backed Sienna Naturals has completely packaged their range of natural hair products in sage and emerald green bottles and the two hues have also made a strong presence throughout the brand’s Instagram feed. Last year, Bread Beauty Supply picked a very bright lime green for the packaging of its new scalp duo and R+Co Bleu chose none other than the color green to front their line of Repair & Moisture products

But, it’s not just hair products that are feeling Gen Z green’s impact. As of late, the shade has become the trending color in hair looks with folks choosing to add some Billie Eilish-inspired chunky green streaks in their hair or, better yet, coat their entire head with the vibrant hue. Considering that interest surrounding all shades of green is showing no signs of slowing down, it might be a good idea to hop on the Gen Z Green bandwagon. If you’re a stylist who’s a little hesitant about playing around with such an eye-catching color, allow us to ease your worries with some green hair inspo. Ahead, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ways to incorporate the shade into your hairstyles.

Get Buzzed

As hairstylist Lane Meredith proves adding some green hair art on a bleached buzzcut can really elevate the look as a whole. We’re obsessed with these two-tone green butterflies that she painted on.

Loose Ends

Box braids always look gorgeous but the protective style looks extra stunning when done up in green with curly loose ends as shown by model Khanysia

Dip Dyed Ends

Make like colorist Francesca Inverarity and add neon green along the bottom of a bleach blonde bob for a powerful two-tone statement.

Colored Roots

Have a client that’s looking for a color change but doesn’t want to spend hours in the chair? Take some inspo from Billie Eilish and add a shade of vivid green to their roots for an extra cool look like this one worn by hair artist and youtuber Stella Cini

Baby Braids

Add a fresh twist to some baby braids like hairstylist Exotismos by adding a pop of green to some face-framing strands of hair.

Money Piece

While truthfully any color would work nicely as a money piece, we highly recommend taking some inspo from hairstylist Mariah Walraven and opting for a stunning shade of jade green because this look is such a vibe.

Embellished Side Braid

Give pretty waves an added cool-factor by incorporating an embellished braid on the side of the head like hairstylist James Earnshaw. We love his choice of metallic green thread!

Modern Mullet

As this super edgy look from hairstylist Katie Mullen proves, green looks good on absolutely everything—even a shaggy mullet.

Pinch of Lime

Elevating a simple hairstyle is as easy as adding some lime green highlights to frame the face as hairstylist Chelsey Ruiz conveys with this look.

Short and Sweet

For those feeling particularly daring, it’s totally not a bad idea to opt for some all-over color in a striking shade of green. This color looks especially gorgeous on natural curls as writer Gabi Thorne proves.
