Sky Kim Shares Exactly How She Prepped Lola Young’s Jet Black ‘New Hollywood’ Hairstyle for the ’26 Grammys

02/02/2026

“Messy” singer Lola Young had an epic night at the 68th Annual Grammys. Up for two awards, she went home with a win for “Best Pop Solo Performance.” She also debuted an entirely new look.

Until very recently, Young had been known for her hair trendsetting, popularizing an ever bolder Calico look. After a well-deserved break, Young returned to the limelight with fully jet black, forever-long hair thanks to celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim, and the help of a new hair color line from Danger Jones and clip in extensions from The Hair Shop

Kim tells The Tease, “True black carries its own authority. It absorbs light, reveals texture, and creates a sense of permanence that feels both modern and timeless.”

Of the styling, she says, “This look pulls from Old Hollywood glamour but breaks the rules on purpose. It’s polished, high-shine, and sculpted, yet loud, playful, and unapologetic — just like Lola. We wanted the hair to feel iconic without feeling precious, blending classic structure with a modern edge.” She adds, “It’s glamour that owns the room, doesn’t ask permission, and moves with confidence under every light.” We call it new Hollywood hair.

Read on for a detailed breakdown from Kim and team including the exact milk_shake products she used to get Young red carpet ready.

Get the Color:

  • “For Lola Young’s black hair look, we used Danger Jones EPILOGUE (launching March 1) full coverage permanent color, chosen for its high-shine results. It features a PPD and resorcinol-free formula, a creamy, easy-to-apply consistency, and ability to deliver a bold black without sacrificing shine or movement.”

Get the Look:

  1. Hair is prepped on damp hair with milk_shake Leave-In Conditioner to support moisture balance and improve manageability, followed by milk_shake Blow Dry Primer to protect against heat while smoothing the cuticle. milk_shake Bodifying Cream is applied through the roots and mid-lengths to add structure, density, and controlled volume prior to blow-drying.
  2. After the blow-dry, hair is refined with targeted styling. Milk_shake thermo protector  is reapplied between touch-ups to maintain hair integrity during additional heat exposure. A small amount of milk_shake smoothing cream is worked through the ends to soften texture, reduce flyaways, and refine the silhouette.
  3. The look is finished with milk_shake Let it shine spray to enhance surface gloss and light reflection, then set with milk_shake Extra Strong Hairspray to lock in shape, control flyaways, and ensure long-lasting hold while maintaining a polished, camera-ready finish.
