Before the term “beauty influencer” had even stepped foot in the world, Lauren Luke was filming makeup tutorials from her bedroom, with wishes to simply assist her eBay customers. Nowhere in her process was anything regarding content strategy, brand deals, or any expectation that one day, a requested makeup tutorial would go viral, and everything in her life would change.
Fast forward 20 years, and Luke has built a career spanning across Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, launched a cosmetics line, made appearances in TV documentaries, and recently partnered with Vaseline after an 18-year-old beauty hack she shared online that inspired a new product.
Though social media has transformed drastically since Luke’s starting point, she remains confident that the principles behind lasting success have stayed consistent: seek authenticity, exude curiosity, and always show up for yourself and others.
How a Side Hustle Turned Into a Global Audience
Luke’s origin stems from her eBay roots, where she began creating makeup application videos to differentiate her products from other listings. But instead of inquiring about the products, customers became captivated by her videos, urging her to begin uploading full tutorials on YouTube.
“I didn’t even think of the audience on Youtube,” Luke said. “I was just busy trying to look after my eBay customers. And then it went bang.”
Her true viral moment occurred after crafting a requested look inspired by singer Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” music video, complete with smoky green eyes.
When reflecting back, Luke noted that she now sees how her authentic, home content proved to associate more significantly with viewers than the polished, commercial beauty imagery they were accustomed to.
“I think the everyday girl just didn’t really…it wasn’t there,” she said. “When you’ve got someone in their bedroom just doing their makeup…I think that’s how it took off.”
Authenticity Is Still the Most Valuable Currency
Lauren Luke’s commitment to authenticity shines through every aspect of her personality and branding.
“[I] stayed authentic to myself the whole way through because it can be so easy to lose that,” she said. “I feel like that’s my core.”
Her mindset extends beyond her own brand, and directs her methods for brand partnerships; rather than accepting every opportunity, Luke prides herself in only working with companies she genuinely believes in.
“You just take on brands that you care about and that you like the product. If you don’t, you just say no,” she said. “You can see through a lie. You can smell it a mile off.”
For creators like Luke, that trust means everything to their brand.
“People have trust in you and you can’t buy that,” she notes.
Consistency Matters More Than Going Viral
Even with her success, Luke can still acknowledge that building an audience in today’s media climate can feel very intimidating, especially when initial posts receive a lack of engagement.
She believes that continuing to create is the best response to the feelings of intimidation, and she described it as a parallel to feeding birds.
“I had a bird feeding station out there for months and no birds would come,” she said. “But then they know you’re there and then you can’t get rid of them.”
Instead of aiming for overnight success, she urges creators to develop sustainable habits, such as a consistent posting schedule and a focus on internal growth rather than external comparison.
“I think people put pressure on themselves,” she said. “Just have fun and be authentic.”
She also recommends creators to tailor content per platform rather than post identical videos across all forms of media. She explains this further, stating how her Youtube audience prefers longer-form tutorials, whereas her Facebook posts perform better when they follow templates such as “get ready with me” vlogs and personal, shorter updates.
Having a significant understanding of the variations amongst media forms has allowed Luke to remain relevant and successful across multiple platforms and generations of social media.
The Best Creator Advice Is Surprisingly Simple
Even after experiencing nearly two decades of industry transformations, Luke believes the secret to content creation has never changed.
Rather than fixating on unrealistic perfectionism, she urges fellow creators to treat their cameras as they would their friends, experimenting regardless of rules and staying aligned with why they started creating in the first place.
Luke’s career is a perfect example of how authenticity overpowers trends; nearly 18 years after sharing a Vaseline beauty hack on Youtube, the same hack inspired a product collaboration with Vaseline Originals, which was an ideal full circle moment for Luke.
In an industry that thrives off of virality, Lauren Luke’s story reminds us that lasting success doesn’t depend on algorithms alone. It blossoms by gaining trust, showing up consistently, and cultivating content that aims to truly help people.
