Barb Thompson on Hilary Duff’s ‘Mature’ Music Video Hair

11/10/2025

Millennial group chats and DMs were ablaze last week when our unofficial queen, Hilary Duff, announced “Mature,” her first single since 2015’s slept-on, Breathe In. Breathe Out. Then she dropped the song and music video, and removed any doubt that she was back, back.

In the video for “Mature,” Duff sings to her younger self from the vantage point of having seen some shit — a meta reference to her own life and decades-long career in the spotlight. Directed by Lauren Dunn, ingénue Duff is a glittery, literal “Gold Dust Woman” come flower child in sparkling fringe and fur. Wiser, more “Mature,” Duff is draped in leather and slinks about with hard-earned confidence.

The two are linked by Duff’s signature blonde, styled to perfection by celebrity hairstylist and long-time collaborator, Barb Thompson.

Of the hair design for the music video, Thompson told The Tease, “We really wanted it to feel cool. I know I say this a lot but not fussy — effortless, and lived-in.” Thompson delivered her own distinctly Californian aesthetic, an undone texture that rivals the best “French girl hair,” using Biolage products on set.

Thompson “wanted the hair to move with [Duff] and for it to be touchable,” which was on full display throughout. There was always shape and control but never at the expense of movement. She adds, “Even when we put the hair into the updo, we didn’t want that feeling to change almost like [Duff] had done it herself.” Mission accomplished, and more on that updo below.

Get the Look:

  • Start with Some Shine: Thompson prepped Duff’s hair with the Smoothing Shine Milk and Hydra Source Leave-In Tonic to lock in hydration and give that mirror-like finish. Think glass hair, but softer with absolutely zero frizz in sight.

  • The Must-Have Hairspray: For hold that lasts from set to after-hours, Thompson opted for Complete Control Flexible Hairspray. It kept every strand in place without the crunch, leaving a glossy and flexible texture that moved naturally on screen.

  • The Refresh: After long hours on set, Thompson used a few drops of Smooth Proof Serum to revive Duff’s her ends, adding silky smoothness and a boost of shine before the ponytail transformation that features in the opening of the music video.
