Miley Cyrus knows how to command a stage, and for her first-ever, hotly-anticipated performances at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, her hair was just as memorable as her vocals. Behind her effortlessly cool, stage-ready look was celebrity hairstylist Bobby Eliot, who relied on Bio Ionic tools.
Eliot says, “The inspiration for Miley’s show hair was lived-in, sexy, rock & roll. I wanted it to feel like Miley and nothing overly done.”
We caught up with Eliot for an exclusive chat about the singer’s very blonde, “Bass Persuades” hair era and more. Keep reading for our conversation plus a how-to.
The Tease: Miley has never been afraid to reinvent herself through her hair. How would you describe the hair aesthetic of her “Bass Persuades” era, especially the Hollywood Bowl show? What makes it distinct from her previous looks?
Bobby Eliot: The hair for this era is stripped back and effortless. It’s more of an extension of Miley and her true natural essence. Moment and texture are key.
What were your biggest creative references when developing Miley’s hair for this era?
Eliot: Miley is the reference for this era! Her true essence is rock & roll, but also effortless and cool. She is the epitome of undone cool in a way that speaks for itself.
How do you collaborate with her to create hairstyles that feel fresh and unexpected while still feeling authentically Miley?
Eliot: She is the ultimate collaborator with hair. She knows who she is and what she wants to convey. It makes my job a dream because we’re aligned and we both know what we want to convey. Effortless always.
Miley is obviously very blonde right now and you’re using the very best hot tools to create the look — but how do you ensure that you’re maintaining the integrity of her hair? Any products or tips that hair professionals should pay attention to?
Eliot: Miley is really blonde, so we’ve maintained the integrity of her hair by leaning into her natural texture as much as possible. Miley has the best texture, so I play with that as much as possible. When we do use heat styling, we always use heat protection! We also always use tools on a lower heat level and slowly raise the temperature only when needed.
Read on for a breakdown of how Eliot created Miley Cyrus’s lived-in look for her Hollywood Bowl shows, including the exact Bio Ionic tools he used.
Get the Look:
- Start off with damp hair and use the Bio Ionic Aerogravity Featherlight Dryer to blow-dry the hair. Use the diffuser attachment to dry the hair and let the natural texture of the hair form.
- Once the hair is dry, use the Bio Ionic 10X Flat Iron to create a lived-in texture by using the iron to bend the hair in different patterns and directions.
