Britney Spears’ Most Unforgettable Music Video Hairstyles

11/16/2021

Britney Spears is a living legend. That’s just a fact. Since first bursting onto the scene and into our hearts 23 years ago with her debut single “…Baby One More Time,” the singer has consistently pushed the boundaries of what it means to be a pop star with her dance-heavy performances and sugary-sweet vocals. Of course, her fantastic catalogue of music videos has also helped cement her status as a cultural icon and the Princess of Pop.

And, when it comes to those many, many music videos of hers—there’s 43 total!!—the singer has always delivered when it comes to serving an unforgettable hair look. In fact, if you’re a millennial like me, you probably even grew up trying to recreate a few of them.

Now that the singer is officially freed from her conservatorship of 13 years, it seems like as good a time as any to take a look back at some of her greatest music video hair moments.

Ahead, a few of our favorite hair looks from Spears’ music videos.

1998: “…Baby One More Time”

Who could ever forget Britney’s iconic schoolgirl look that she sported in her debut music video for her smash hit, “…Baby One More Time”? Her braided pigtails tied with ribbon and fluffy pink scrunchies are easily one of her most famous—and most copied—hairstyles of all time.

1999: “Sometimes

Dressed in all white everything, the singer served major girl-next-door vibes with her wispy bangs and that single braid peeking out of her tousled waves.

1999: “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart”

Britney totally made a case for bucket hats with this cozy green fleece number that she sported on top of her dark wavy locks.

2000: “Oops…I Did It Again”

When you think about Britney and her “Oops… I Did It Again” music video, it’s hard not to think about that unforgettable red latex jumpsuit. While the futuristic look was totally iconic on its own, we can’t deny that the star’s slicked-down side bangs and teased strands totally helped take it to the next level.

2000: “Lucky”

Britney totally looked the part of a starlet with these ultra-glam Old Hollywood waves. Doesn’t she look lovely?

2000: “Stronger”

Few people can make crimped hair look as good as Britney did in her “Stronger” music video. We love the added texture her crimped pieces bring to this more sleek style.

2001: “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman”

The video for her heartfelt, coming-of-age ballad, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” introduced a much blonder Britney than we’d seen before—bleach blonde to be exact—and single-handedly convinced us all to bleach our brows to match our hair.

2001: “I’m a Slave 4 U”

Let’s face it, we all wanted to be Britney in her “I’m a Slave 4 U” music video. Not only is her dancing on fire in this, but this sultry wet hair look is such a moment.

2002: “Boys”

Britney’s messy pony and Bumpit pouf with face-framing strands is so early 2000s and we freaking love it!

2004: “Toxic”

From bedazzled Britney to sexy flight attendant Britney, we saw the singer don many notable looks for her “Toxic” music video. One of our personal favorites was seeing the star turn into a motorcycle riding, fiery redhead.

2007: “Gimme More”

As much as we love Britney as a blonde, we can’t deny that she totally pulls off this inky black hue.

2007: “Piece of Me”

We don’t think Britney or her hair has ever looked better. I mean, check out those gorgeous waves!

2008: “Womanizer”

We are absolutely living for all of Britney’s alter egos in her “Womanizer” music video, especially her turn as a red haired, tattooed waitress.

2008: “Circus”

The superstar totally slayed as a circus ringleader with her 1920s-inspired curly blond bob.

2011: “I Wanna Go”

Britney totally nailed the punk pop princess look with her blond hair and chunky pink and black streaks.

2011: “Hold It Against Me”

The singer served major glam vibes with these big voluminous curls and eye-brow grazing bangs.

2013: “ Ooh La La”

The singer had us all ooh-la-la-ing over her loose waves and buttery blonde hair color. We’re obsessed with this look!

2015: “Pretty Girls”

The singer totally transported us back to the ‘80s with these voluminous crimped curls.

2016: “Make Me..”

From her blond highlights and textured mermaid waves to that cool black fedora, everything about this look is pure perfection.

2016: “Slumber Party”

Let this video serve as proof that Britney can rock a messy topknot like no other.
