Hair artist John Novotny has taken an unexpected but delightful approach to holiday decorating. For the past three years he’s added hair to his tree, artfully draping pieces in a cascading fashion for a bold impact.
Christmas decorations can be cunty!
Novotny tells The Tease, “It’s literally just whatever incomplete sets of extensions I have — random one off pieces from shoots that I don’t have a use for, for the next few months!” “It’s just tons and tons of hair that’s been sitting in drawers or hanging in my rack that’s the less pulled out colors for my clients that I drape all over the tree.”
Reflecting his work as an in-demand celebrity and editorial hairstylist, he adds “And if I need a wig sometimes I’ll just take one off the tree.”

In the past Novotny has used ornaments for his hair trees, but this year’s tree is more about “earth tones and a naturalistic approach.” And, in case you were wondering, there’s no lights because Novotny rightly worries about fire.
