How Marylle Koken’s Creativity Inspired Her Latest Collection

07/10/2020

Marylle Koken is a celebrity hairstylist, salon owner and Sebastian Professional ambassador who specializes in editorial work. Her inspiration comes from “the core of her creative mind.” She walks into a shoot with an idea in mind and watches it come to life. According to Koken, to produce a creative collection like the one featured here, you have to “let yourself go and let [the shoot] naturally happen.”

For this particular collection, Koken wanted to create “lived-in hair that’s a hybrid of modern and street style—something super edgy but super clean at the same time.” Koken wasn’t going for “ready to wear.” She wanted to create something that she, along with others, haven’t seen before: “something bold, something out there.”

For the hairstyling, Koken looked to Sebastian Professional products. She used their Texture Maker, Dark Oil Silkening Mist, Craft Clay and Zero Gravity Hairspray to create the looks. She handmade each wiglet worn by the models, using a “pinch and skim” technique to achieve “really cool, uneven texture.”

Thanks to Koken’s incredible team, she is able to keep “pushing [herself] creatively” and producing incredible styling. For a collection like this, “you need to have the right team—the right ingredients to bring [your idea] to life,” she says. “If you don’t have the right photographer that has the same vision, it won’t work.”

Nick Berardi photographed the images, while Eric J. Allen supplied glam and Tiffany Johnston and Joel Sebastian provided support on set.
