There’s nothing funny about how good “Female Comedian” and “Overcompensating” star Mary Beth Barone’s hair looked on the British GQ Men of the Year event red carpet. Worn down and center-parted, it was sleek but not in the lifeless, glass-hair way we’ve become accustomed to seeing. There was body and movement, and there was a heavy curtain bang that was almost hime-like — immediately reminiscent of Cher.
Celebrity hairstylist and groomer Josh Knight, who styled Barone’s hair for the event, tells The Tease that this was no accident. “It was so collaborative working with Mary Beth and we went for slick elegant hair with a bit of an edge, ” he says, adding, “We were looking at pics of Cher from the 60s and wanted to reference that vibe for the event.”
A few decades later, but the look is also giving the swagger of Cher’s famous “Mom, I am a rich man” quote, too! Read on for a breakdown on the look directly from Knight, including the exact products he used.

- “I used Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil to give it shine and help control any frizz. Then I prepped the hair with Bumble and bumble. Thickening Blow-Dry Prep Spray and blow dried with a large round brush to give the roots volume.
- Blow drying the bangs forward frames the face.
- Then we added long thick hair extensions. I went through with a hair straighter, using Bed Head Headrush Shine Spray to give it extra shine. Then I cut the extensions to customize the hair to them.
- After this, I went back over the hair with Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray and bending the ends with a hair straighter.
- Then I finished with Sam McKnight Dress to Kill Define and Defrizz Creme on the ends.”
