It’s no secret that hair accessories are having a major moment. Cool claw clips, oversized scrunchies, and Gossip Girl-worthy headbands have been popping up literally everywhere. But, as much as we all love adorning our hair with pretty accessories, those of us with textured hair know that not every hair clip and scarf out there is best suited for our hair type. In fact, some can be downright damaging to our curls and coils, causing breakage, frizz, and added dryness.

That’s why, if you have natural or textured hair, it’s important to make sure you’re reaching for satin or silk lined accessories the next time you’re styling your strands. Unlike other materials, silks smooths over your curls, helps to retain moisture, and eliminates friction that can cause split ends and tangles.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite silky accessories that not only look good but will keep your hair safe from harm. Ahead, 6 silk and satin hair accessories that you (and your curls) are sure to love!

November marks Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and important contributions of Native people. While there are so many ways that you can show your support for the Indigenous community during these month-long festivities (and beyond!), we highly suggest throwing your money behind some Native-owned business, particularly ones in the hair space.

It’s no secret that Indigenous people have continued to be vastly underrepresented in the hair industry. In fact, you may have even noticed this yourself the last time you walked down the aisle of your favorite beauty store and failed to come across even a single hair product from an Indigenous-owned brand.

That’s why we’re taking the time to shine a spotlight on a few of our favorite brands that are owned and operated by members of the Native American community. These brands are not only creating high-quality — often handcrafted — products, but they are doing so while also honoring their heritage and traditions.

Here, four Indigenous-owned brands to support now—and always.

Sister Sky

The brainchild of sisters, Monica Simeon and Marina TurnigRob—who are both citizens of the Spokane Tribe in Washington State—Sister Sky is a certified Native American, women-owned company producing natural haircare products that honor their Native roots. All of their hair products as well as their lotions and bath bombs are created using plant-based ingredients such as sweet grass, white willow, and sage that have been harvested by their Native American grandmothers.

Recommended Product: Sister Sky Sweetgrass Shampoo, $12.50

Kokom Scrunchies

What started as a fundraising idea to support her local powwow has since blossomed into a successful hair accessories brand, called Kokom Scrunchies, for 10-year-old Mya, who is Algonquin from the Kitigan Zibi Reserve in Ottawa, Canada. Inspired by her grandmother—”kokom” translates to grandmother in Algonquin language—the young entrepreneur creates beautiful handmade scrunchies from traditional Indigenous kokum scarves (floral patterned scarves that are typically worn as head coverings by Indigenous elders).

Recommended Product: Kokom Scrunchies White Beaded Hummingbird Scrunchie, $10.00

Ketahli Beauty

Founder Latoya Ashwin, a Noongar mom of four, created Ketahli Beauty as a way to honor the beauty of her people, especially the too often overlooked women who are the backbone of Aboriginal families. The name Ketahli comes from a combination of her three daughters’ names: Ke—Keahni, Tah—Tahkara, and Li—Maharlie. All of the hair products from this Australian-based brand are created in small batches and made from native Australian ingredients that are not only ethically sourced, but have been used by their ancestors for thousands of years.

Recommended Product: Ketahli Beauty Repair Me Mask, $35.00

The Yukon Soaps Company

For over twenty years, founder Joella Hogan has been making handcrafted natural soaps, essential oils, and grooming products in Yukon, Canada — hence the name, Yukon Soaps Company. Coming from a long line of Indigenous women, Hogan continues to honour her Northern Tutchone heritage with her company by using local plants such as Boreal plants and wild rose petals in her formulations, using Na-cho Nyak Dun plant knowledge, and by sprinkling in Northern Tutchone language in wherever she can.

Recommended Product: Wild Side Shave Soap, $12.00

Let’s face it: as much as we all love a good deal, there’s absolutely no better feeling than treating yourself to that special product you’ve been eyeing for months (or years). I mean, who wouldn’t want to splurge on a new hair clip or a high-quality hair brush?

Will you be sporting any of these hair accessories this season?

No matter what your plans are this Valentine’s Day, we think that it’s the perfect opportunity to show your hair some extra love with a brand new hairstyle. If you’re feeling stuck on what to do with your hair —no worries!

We rounded up the prettiest hairstyles that are perfect for you and whatever festivities you have planned for this Sunday (whether it be a Zoom date, galentine’s girls’ night, or even a solo hang). The best part is, all of these hair looks are fairly simple to recreate. So, without further ado, here are 10 Valentine’s Day hairstyles that will have you racking up the compliments.

Braided Top Bun

A classic bun is always a good idea! Take a cue from @freshlengths and twist your box braids into a high bun at the crown at your head.

It’s All About the Headband

If you’re short on time, a headband is your best friend. We love how hairstylist Bobby Eliot dressed up a curly bob with a chic velvet headband.

Think Pink

Nothing screams Valentine’s Day like pretty pink hair. Go for a subtle pop of color with a dusty rose money piece like this one dreamed up by hair colorist Amy Baines.

Bling It On

If you’re looking to make a major hair statement, three words: flip and clip! As hairstylist Sophie Sugarman proves, flipped-out ends paired with rhinestone hair clips are pretty much a match made in (hair) heaven.

Take a Bow

When it comes to hair bows, the bigger the better. We’re beyond obsessed with this velvet bow that hairstylist Natalie Ann added to this voluminous half-up half-down hair look.

Messy Low Pony

Don’t be afraid to trade in your everyday pony for a messy low pony that’s perfect for all your Zoom plans. Take some inspo from hairstylist Brittany Sullivan and pull out some face-framing pieces to elevate this chic look!

Soft Waves

There’s nothing more timeless that soft, glam waves! To recreate this romantic look by hairstylist Linda Ha, just grab your favorite heat protectant and curling iron and prepare to make some major waves.

Curly High Pony

Sometimes all you need is a cute scrunchie to create a stunning hair look as hairstylist Brittany Sullivan proves. Just grab your favorite scrunchie and pile your curls on the crown of your head for a fun and flirty updo.

Bold Braids

Braids are one of the easiest ways to glam up any hair look. We are big fans of these braided bangs that hairstylist Yuichi Ishida added to these simple waves.

If you’ve spent any time on social media the past few months, you’ve probably heard the term “cottagecore” being thrown around. It’s the dreamy aesthetic that’s been trending during quarantine and the reason why your Instagram feed has been filled with images of elaborate picnic setups and girls in frilly, floral dresses. Pretty much, cottagecore speaks to this romanticized idea of living in the countryside.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAgCGJlpkGY/

For those of you who still have no idea what I’m talking about, TikTok user Lillie Elkins (@lillies.apothecary) defines it best: “Anyone else just want to, like, move off the grid into a cottage in the middle of a forest where you can bathe in a nearby stream, make your own quilts, grow your own herbs and spices, and dance with fairies?” It’s basically Taylor Swift’s Folklore brought to life.

Quarantine’s favorite aesthetic has been popping up in everything from fashion to interior design and now, even hair. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite hairstyles that give off major cottagecore vibes.

Flowers In Her Hair

The cottagecore aesthetic is very romantic and soft, so for hair this means decorating your lovely locks with some pretty blooms. The more flowers, the better!

This flower pull through braid look that celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan created is fit for a Disney princess. She shared a tutorial on her TikTok for this style that you’ll surely want to copy for your next picnic.

If box braids are more your vibe, try adding some colorful florals to your look like content creator Ashley Sims .

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBI2h-0jBiI/

A french braid looks extra pretty when adorned with daisies like this one on blogger Emma Graceland.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAsirPLpeu7/

Clip It Real Good

These days claw clips have become super popular, especially for people who are fans of the cottagecore look. The beloved ‘90s hair accessory is perfect for pulling off all those effortlessly cute hairstyles you’ve been seeing all over Instagram.

Keep your hair out of your face while you frolic in some fields with an adorable butterfly clip like blogger Mia Enriquez.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CC6glg1gAKN/

Make all your half-up half-down hair dreams come true with a cute clip that matches your outfit like influencer Matilda Djerf.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAlOZ6ZHHYR/

Wrap It Up

Hair scarves have easily become everyone’s favorite hair accessory this season and for good reason – there’s so many ways to style them.

Keep things super simple and just wrap your scarf around your hair like creator Iridessence.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CB9HE7jgaor/

Give your favorite hair tie a rest and dress up your ponytail with a pretty patterned scarf like blogger Kelsey Heinrichs.

There’s no denying that celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan has taken the hair world by storm with her Kitsch x Justine Marjan collection of hair accessories. In fact, you’ve likely seen her bedazzled hair clips all over your Instagram feed — especially her “GLAM” and “bo$$” word barrettes. With each of her collections, Marjan always seems to top herself, dreaming up a new range of pieces that fans are sure to obsess over.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmGuC2ppWq/

As was the case with her fourth drop in collaboration with the LA-based accessory brand. On Aug. 7th, the duo announced the release of their brand-new collection and “it’s all about that angel energy.”

The line features two new signature word barrettes that say “angel” and “baby” as well as an array of other pieces that fit her angel theme. “This drop is inspired by our two new word pins: Baby and Angel. We wanted the collection to feel soft, feminine, and angelic.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDzPSuFp7AS/

Marjan definitely played into the angel aesthetic with clips adorned with cherubs, angels, and dreamy crystals. Not to mention, this time around she debuted never-before-seen pull-tie scrunchies and princess-worthy ruched chiffon headbands in blush pink and black.

The scrunchies are definitely a stand-out in the collection. According to Marjan, they are super easy to use thanks to the addition of the jaw string. She adds, “this will allow all users to get the pretty effect of the scrunchie without the hassle. It’s an easy way to upgrade your pony and for more styling, use the pins!”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDwXaz6pOMJ/

Honestly, with so many incredible pieces in the collection, you really can’t go wrong with any item, but Marjan personally recommends the Rhinestone Stacker 8pc Set.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CD2VTu9Jx8_/

“This is such a fun collection that can easily be mixed and matched, worn in the hair, on your wrist, on your bag or however your heart desires,” she said. “ The pieces can easily be dressed up or down and are the perfect way to amp up your selfie and add some sparkle to your style.”

Priced between $14-$29, the Kitsch x Justine Marjan All About That Angel Energy collection is available for purchase at mykitsch.com. For information about upcoming product launches follow both Justin Marjan and Kitsch on Instagram.

“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.”

We have all seen this quote. It’s a gem for sure. But, how many of us are actually taking these words and putting them into action?

Being a mother of four is the greatest gift I have ever been given. It’s taught me so much about what matters most, including how precious time is and how little we actually have. With such limited time, quality of life has become very important to me. And in my humble opinion, happiness is one of the greatest successes we can have and should strive to achieve.

Even as a licensed cosmetologist of over 20 years, I am (as we all are) in a constant state of growth and change on the path to becoming the person I was always meant to be. With that being said, it wasn’t until more recently that I truly started to find this happiness in my craft.

I was feeling stuck and burnt out working behind the chair. I knew there was something more for me: a higher form of expression of my artistic abilities through hair. So I began creating my own unique, artistic style. Insert here the wonderful world of art and expression, where there are no rules, no limits and no boundaries on your imagination.

Hair is my canvas and my medium. I freehand colors in interesting and intricate ways using direct dyes, body paint and anything else I can think up to create a color story. Having this artistic outlet has taught me that patience is a virtue, the value of practicing often, and that you should always have hope.

Hope is the basis for patience, determination and courage. By keeping this value in mind, we can be calm, patient and more sympathetic toward others. With it, we turn ourselves into leaders, and when faced with hardships, we believe we will get through it.

As a result of the trials and tribulations in life, I finally realized just how therapeutic and vital art and artistic expression is! So, I encourage you, believe in your passion and its purpose.

Anything worth doing well in life is led first by your passion and the happiness it brings you. It’s what brings life to your purpose, so listen to it. Make it a priority and everything else will fall into place from there.
