For British makeup artist Bea Sweet, makeup acts as a tool that visually represents intersectionalities. Whether it can help address one’s sexuality, culture, or feminism, makeup is more than just applying products to the face.

After studying Prosthetics at The London College of Fashion, Sweet realized there was more to life beyond silicone and Orc sculptures so she decided to pursue her love for prosthetics, just in a fashion context. Sweet’s initial interest in beauty was sparked by her love of heavy metal music, more specifically Fallon Bowman from the all-female metal band Kittie, Skin from Skunk Anansie & Shirley Manson from Garbage

Nowadays, Sweet pulls inspiration from things outside of the makeup world like feminist podcasts, ‘80s books, and ballet, all of which are key in allowing Sweet to produce her art. To Sweet, it is crucial that she believes in the art that she produces as well as the messages that she sends out into the world. Sweet’s hobbies and interests naturally feed into her makeup, helping her have an honest voice and maintain fluidity when it comes to creating her work.

Since her start in the beauty industry, Sweet has taken the fashion world by storm racking up an impressive portfolio of clients such as FKA Twigs, Adwoa Aboah, Charli XCX, Erykah Badu, Dua Lipa, and Taylor Russell. In addition, Sweet has collaborated with a handful of notable photographers, stylists, and designers, allowing her makeup to grace high fashion runways all around the world. If you enjoy reading editorial magazines, chances are you have seen Sweet’s work as it’s been featured on the covers of Dazed, GQ, i-D, V Magazine, and Vogue (British, CS, HK, Japan).

Sweet describes her beauty aesthetic as “deliberate, feminine and intelligent,” making her craft incredibly versatile. Her appeal stems from her masterful manipulation of intentionally placed textures and colors. Anything you can think of, Sweet can create. From bold-metallic pigments and striking paint-stroke liner to opaque powdery pastel eyes and futuristic glossy highlights, all of which are paired with effortless glowing skin as the canvas.

Every one of Sweet’s looks champions an unfiltered realness and fresh-faced aesthetic accompanied by a celebration of uniqueness. Rather than slathering the face with heavy amounts of makeup and creating over-the-top statements with extravagant color, Sweet’s intention is to tailor her looks to each individual face that she works with. What sets her apart from other makeup artists is her eye for innovation, highlighting each and every facial structure that she works on. Sweet’s looks are known to radiate minimal glamour, drawing attention to the eyes and lips and leaving bases looking almost naked — skin is lightly touched up but never camouflaged, allowing beauty marks, freckles, and skin’s natural texture to peek through, and pigments always perfectly complementing skin tones and face shapes.

Across all of Sweet’s work, enhancing an individual’s unique beauty through her unconventional artistic ability bridges the gap between makeup and art. Today, this connection is sparking a new wave of makeup renaissance that’s taking over Instagram.

Her Instagram feed is more than just an ordinary series of aesthetic photos — it’s a mugshot-like edgy documentation of her textual works of art. From salt and pepper fake eyelashes and chrome foil lips to feathered out magenta eyeshadow and lips that are solely adorned with bright red liner, each of Sweet’s posts showcases her eccentric visions and one of a kind talent.

Have you ever felt personally victimized by a brand’s ads on Instagram or TikTok? In my case, the brand is IL MAKIAGE. These days, I can’t scroll through my feed without seeing yet another video or photo calling me to try one of their products.

What’s been their pull in, lately? Helping you find your exact match for their signature WOKE UP LIKE THIS foundation ($45.00) based on their perfected questionnaire. Their ads have been all over my feed for years, but it wasn’t until recently that I finally gave in.

The PowerMatch Quiz

The first step is to take their infamous PowerMatch quiz. It asks all the common questions: what is your skin type, what kind of coverage you are looking for, and the finish you want from a foundation. But when it comes to picking what tone your skin is , the quiz goes a bit further by providing three slides of pictures, allowing you to pick exactly which skin tone you most closely resemble.

Next up is undertones. If you don’t know your undertones, don’t worry. They walk you through the process of figuring out exactly what it is by asking you unique questions about which jewelry looks better on you, what color your veins are, and if you burn easily—all to figure out the exact color you need.

But, the quiz doesn’t stop there. Next, it asks you about how you apply foundation, how you prep your skin, how often you wear foundation, what brand you are currently using, what your skin concerns are, and your age. This is done all  in the name of finding a foundation that matches both your skin and your habits/routines.

Is It Really the Perfect Match?

Once you finish the lengthy quiz,  you receive your results (after putting in your email, of course!). I was matched with  shade #20 of the WOKE UP LIKE THIS foundation and #2.5 in the F*CK IM FLAWLESS concealer. After experiencing a bit of a shipping situation, in which  their customer service was very quick and super helpful, I finally received my product. The entire time they made sure that I understood what was happening via email. In my experience, customer service was a 10/10.

The absolute best thing about IL MAKIAGE is that they let you test out their products  for 14 days, free of charge. If you send the products back within the trial period, then you don’t get charged. Whatever products you decide to keep, you get charged for those products only.

I automatically started wearing the foundation and concealer every day in order to really test it out before the trial period ended. The shade #20 was not an exact match for my skintone, but  it was pretty close. I was able to wear it without looking crazy, and the first couple of days I really liked how it looked. I thought I had found my new IT product.

Unfortunately, about three days into trying the foundation and concealer out, I broke out in a slight rash on my forehead. Now,  I will note that I had tried a few new products that week so I wasn’t exactly sure that it was the IL MAKIAGE products. However, I took a pause on all makeup products to give my skin some love. After the rash had pretty much gone away, I retested out the products.

While I did not break out again, I did start to notice that the formula did not love my skin. I have dry skin to begin with, however, the foundation started to wear off strangely, looking patchy and orange. It made my skin look drier than it already is. While the product skin match wasn’t terrible, the reality is that the formula was not well-suited for my skin.

The Final Verdict

With that all said, I decided to return my products.  Thankfully, the return process was super easy. You simply go to your confirmation email and click return. From there, it walks you through the whole process.

While IL MAKIAGE’s foundation didn’t work out for me, I 100% recommend trying the PowerMatch process out. It’s no harm, no foul. If you don’t love your products, you can simply return them without being charged. And, who knows,  maybe you will find the perfect product for you! I wish that more brands offered  trial periods for their products like IL MAKIAGE. If they did, I would definitely be more inclined to try new products out!

What other beauty brands do you get targeted ads for on social media? Let us know on our Instagram (@readthetease) and maybe we will try it so you don’t have to!

Getting a haircut can be exciting or nerve-wracking (or perhaps even a little of both?). What’s more, the thought of chopping off your tresses before anxiously waiting for them to grow back in — which can take years! — can feel overwhelming for some folks (yours truly, included!)

However, one haircut I’m genuinely excited about — as is the rest of the Internet —is the butterfly haircut. The latest and greatest hair trend has taken TikTok and Instagram by storm, and it’s easy to see why. This style practically screams effortlessly cool, and, best of all, it’s easy to achieve.

Keep scrolling for more insight on this Insta-famous haircut: We tapped some of our favorite hairstylists, who are spilling the tea on everything you need to know.

What is the Butterfly Cut?

While the butterfly cut continues to take over your social media feed, it’s actually not new. In fact, Los Angeles-based hairstylist Genevieve Garner tells The Tease that the cut has been around since the ‘90s: As they say, what’s old is new again.

Additionally, according to Devin Toth, a stylist at Salon SCK in New York City, “A butterfly haircut is a long layered haircut that has some shorter, angled layers in the front.” He continues, telling The Tease, “The layers seamlessly flow from shorter in the front to longer in the back.” Put simply, this ‘90s-inspired cut is designed to “give the hair as much volume and movement as possible,” thanks to an abundance of layers, explains Nunzio Saviano, stylist & owner of Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York City.

Who is the Butterfly Cut Best For?

Since the look features lots of layers, the butterfly cut works best on longer, thicker hair, explains Saviano. Think of it this way: “The longer the hair, the more of an effect you can create because there’s more room to spread out and distribute a shorter-to-longer angle with your layers,” says Toth. However, that’s not to say you can’t rock the butterfly cut with thinner strands. “The great thing about the butterfly cut is that almost everyone can have their own version of it,” adds Garner.

So, if your hair is on the thinner side, don’t fret. Per Toth, “As long as the angle is cut properly in the front, the hair should easily flow away from the face.” Plus, says Garner, you can always “amp up the volume with your favorite texture spray!”

How to Ask Your Stylist for the Cut

Ready to take the plunge and try the butterfly haircut for yourself? Simply ask your stylist for a basic long layered haircut angled around the face. More specifically, Saviano recommends keeping the starting length around the face “an inch or so below the chin and add[ing] layers all over, around the crown and sides.” Meanwhile, if you want to play up the volume even more, Garner suggests asking for shorter layers.

How to Style the Butterfly Haircut

To keep your haircut looking just as incredible as it did when you first stepped out of the salon, reach for your handy blow-dry brush, which, per Garner, will “be your bestie.” Afterward, go in with some texturizing spray, et voila.

No blow-dry brush? No problem. Saviano recommends using a round brush followed by Velcro rollers to add body, volume, and movement — “especially around the face.” Meanwhile, Toth suggests using a large curling iron to style the hair “up and away” instead of “down and towards” the face.

This week for TikTok X The Beauty Industry we talked to Carrie Esser. Carrie Esser is a creative makeup artist and body painter based in Arizona. Carrie is a self-taught artist, who dove into the world of creative makeup and body art in 2013. Her hard work has paid off throughout the years. In 2018 and 2019, Carrie competed in the FACE Awards USA, where she made the top 12 in 2018 and the Top 5 in the country in 2019. Carrie then competed in the second season of Snapchat’s illusion makeup competition, Fake Up, in 2020 where she won two of the weekly challenges and was runner up against a multitude of talented artists. Carrie’s accomplishments do not end there. In 2021, Carrie was not only nominated for Creative Makeup Artist of the Year at the American Influencer Awards but ended up winning the title!

Carrie’s content is taking over our social media. She is huge on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat creating everything from full-body designs to simple everyday looks, Carrie’s talent and passion radiate off of her. She joined us this week with her killer look already on and talked with us all about her journey. Carrie gave us some insight into her time on Fake Up as well as what it was like to win Creative Makeup Artist of the Year at the American Influencer Awards. On top of all that, she gave some of her tips and tricks to TikTok.

You’ll want to take notes!

“One of the really cool elements about that is photographing your work, being able to look at it a year later and being like ‘Oh I can do this better’ or ‘I have learned how to do this better’. And just finding ways to improve without putting that pressure on yourself of being perfect.”

“TikTok is definitely a place without limits. You can really explore and get imaginative. Sometimes that’s a challenge in itself to come up with those ideas.”

“In the end is it about me picking the music that goes with my art or are we trying to get views? Sometimes you’re asking yourself those questions”

I was born in 1968 in a small rural village in North Devon. I grew up in a family of creative women and can’t remember a time where I didn’t love drawing and painting as a way of expressing myself. It was clear to me that being creative made me happy and honestly, at school, I wasn’t really very engaged with anything else.

After leaving school in 1984, I did a two year Art and Design foundation course at North Devon College. I then followed that with a higher national Diploma in Visual Communication and Graphic Design at Suffolk College. My first job was a graphic design position at Osborne and Little in London. I went from there to a design agency in Newmarket, again working as a graphic designer, but I felt disenchanted. It wasn’t what I had imagined and didn’t give me the creative freedom I longed for.

When my youngest daughter left primary school, it became clear that my role as a mum wasn’t needed in quite the same way as when the children were little.  I wanted my children to see me doing something positive with my life. I wanted to show them that if you really want something and are prepared to work hard, you can realize your dreams. That is when I decided to go back to college.

I pursued a diploma in Beauty Therapy followed by another in Theatrical Special Effects, Media Hair and Makeup. I enjoyed every minute, finally feeling I was where I was meant to be. And I relished every new project and fully embraced coming up with new ideas. Having something creative to focus on made me happy again. I went on to win a national award for my hair and makeup design for the Royal Opera House Design Challenge competition. I also achieved the Student Of The Year award at college.

After successfully completing my diplomas, I started to focus on building my portfolio and posting the latest looks on Instagram. When I’m creating looks for my own posts, I am constantly dreaming up something fresh and different to try. Repetition kills creativity. Instagram is saturated with artists creating cut creases, and I’m not interested in being one in the same. I get bored easily and am more interested in experimenting, pushing boundaries and breaking the norm. It’s more exciting to surprise people sometimes.

I don’t believe in one singular style or one area to focus on, because makeup is very much felt and instinctive. Inspiration can be found everywhere: fashion, art, history, nature and my mood can all dictate how a look evolves. I see myself as an ‘artsy’ artist. I love color, texture and embellishments, so I collect constantly and look out for things that might be useful for a future look, a true Magpie. As someone who loves learning new techniques and new ways of creating texture, I find that social media is a very useful platform for learning.

Meeting a new face and making decisions about a model is a very instinctive process. Everyone has something beautiful about them, and I get to bring that beauty to the forefront. It may be beautiful eyes, full lips, great skin, or their personality. Everyone I meet is a blank canvas with endless possibilities. Preparation is an important first step to every look. As tempting as it may be to jump right in, the final look will never be polished if the skin hasn’t had attention first.

Therefore, I start every face with a good cleanser, then determine whether or not the skin and lips need a gentle exfoliation. I follow by prepping with a good moisturizer and clear lip balm to soften and smooth the lips for later. I love when the skin looks natural and glowing. It’s important not to over-apply any of the products, so I start with just enough concealer, bb cream or foundation because it’s easier to add and build coverage where needed rather than laying it on too thick.

I have noticed during the pandemic, people have pared down their makeup and are more interested in skincare. The natural look that I have always appreciated is becoming increasingly popular. More people are caring about sustainability, waste, air-miles and being mindful of their environmental impact. This strange year has given us all time to reflect on our lives and brainstorm how we can move forward and be better. There aren’t many positives to come from a pandemic, but I think the focus on how Beauty can impact our work with nature is a good start.
